Exclamation Resontor or Muffler

Hey guys, I was pulled over and got a ticket for my exhaust being too loud, but I honestly think it wasn't loud at all because I still have stock dp and stock cat and I was driving normal shifting at 3k rpm. I have a speedcircuit single exit wicked-edition catback. I want to buy either two 12" resonators from Vibrant or the Vibrant ultra quiet muffler to quiet down a bit. The thing is I'm afraid the ultra quiet muffler might make my exhaust too quiet and I don't want that. Anybody have any experiences with resonators for mufflers? Would 2 resonators do the job? I searched about this, but didn't find the answer I'm looking for. Any advice? Please help me out guys. Thank you. -Jo

I highly suggest you go with the one offered by speed circuit; it's more expensive, but the parts are tested together, so you don't end up with something that resonates weird at a normal drive speed. If you start mixing and matching this can happen. Manipulation of exhaust gas even a slight amount can cause odd frequency problems. On a side note, did he give you a Db reading of how loud it really was ? I would assume this is just his interpretation of " loud" , and if that is the case, you shouldn't have to pay the ticket.

Also try and look up the exhaust combinations on youtube to get a better idea of sound change in a mini muffler setup, etc.

I believe a muffler will reduce the overall "loudness" of the exhaust but will not get rid of the drone. A resonator will reduce the drone of the exhaust but not really the overall "loudness"

Hope this helps

Thank you for your reply. Price isn't an issue for me, but because of where I live, going cat-less or hfc may not be an option for me due to emission laws. I understand what you're saying. He did not give me a db reading. He judged by how "loud" the exhaust sounded to him. I was curious my self, so I bought a db meter and tested it my self and it was below 95db with only a stock dp and cat while reving/holding to 4500 rpms barely reaching 95db. I will probably fight this ticket.

Thank you for your reply. I see. So it wouldn't matter if I put two resonators, the "loudness" will be the same unless I put a muffler. Understood. Thanks again.
