I assume you are talking about at very high horsepower levels ie when theres a need for new rods pistons, etc. This thread is about comparing stock parts, and if you think the new motor wont be able to handle the same as the 4g63 could stock internaled, then I think you will find that you're wrong. Subaru motors, s2000 motors, sr20s, etc have no problem making 500+whp on there aluminum open deck/semi closed and this motor is more stout than those. If you are talking about very high horsepower then I would probably agree with you, but at that level you can sleeve the motor and not have to worry about it. Even the mighty 4g63 iron block cracks regularly when coolant passages arent filled according to Buschur above 900whp, so it needs sleeves too at that point.

Seems to me like the Evo X con rod is also better designed where the rod beam expands out on the big end ... better 'shoulders' (no idea what the technical term is for this). In essence they look a lot more like some of the aftermarket rods out there.

Found this article for some interesting reading on connecting rods (comments by Brian Crower, Venolia, Carillo, et. al.): http://www.carrilloind.com/Portals/1...Connection.pdf

+1.

Xs rods definitely look better built than the VIII/IXs.

God I wish I could roll with digital calipers. Technically I can, but I pull em out in front of our GF and he flips out. GG reading old fashion verniers because "they're more accurate". Very nice though, you can pretty much tell with the naked eye from the pictures. It's not drastic but anyone with a good eye-micrometer can tell the X's are slightly bigger.

The SR20 is a closed deck design.

Hmm.. heavier rods on the VIII. That seems like an advantage (AFAICS) for the older gens.

if you look 1 post below the quoted post, i meant exactly that.. stock for stock no doubt the X will probably be as strong or stronger..

How is that an advantage? Weight is your enemy. Aftermarket rods are lighter than stock ones and stronger.

the VIII has a longer rod (stroke) that is why it is heavier
