Solution To Shifting Problem
Realistically, there should be no break-in process, especially for a tranny. It should work properly from the get-go.
A change in the fluid could possibly make a difference.

There is a break in of every moving mechanical part in a car as sharp edges become slighly polished and rounded and any burs are worn down. That statement from oil doc I think was a little incorrect. Either way, part of the issue I think may be the shifter cables, as the shifter still feels notchy even when shifting gears with the car turned off and the clutch pressed in. Perhaps the cables loosen up a little over time and improve the shifting feel. I'm gonna be dropping in the ams shifter bushings as soon as they arrive in the mail, and I will jiggle the cables around a little while they are disconected to make sure that thy aren't binding on anything. Maybe give a little spray of lube here and there. Can't hurt.
Theres one other thing it could be: The engine mounts are softer for less nvh...
Of course that shouldnt be effected by wear or temp.....
I read some place where replacing some of the evo VIII and IX mounts made the trans shifter better...

Too me it seems the Evo X is suppose to appeal to more mature people. I have a feeling though its not alot worse than some of the VIII or IX grinding. Its hit or miss. When people are paying close to 40k for an evo now it better damn well shift smooth. Oil doc is right really. Go jump in another car that equally priced and or performance...it doesn't do it. It was all fine and dandy when evo's cost 30k and they were an econobox that hauled a$$. Well they are more refined whats this notchy bs. I hate to say it but damn my 92 dd integra I beat the **** out relentlessly and it has 165k miles and shifts like butter. I guess we should all buy acura's and bmw's. It SHOULD shift smoother though...I could tell just shifting the car in the parking lot it just doesn't feel as fluid movement. The shifter feels nice and short and well put together the tranny just feels like a wrx somewhat.
Some cars do have their own little quirks... Some of those quirks can be fixed or improved by simple measures, some can't.
I have seen posts similar to 'I have 93,000 miles on my EVO and have never had a problem shifting' ... To me, that is a person who drives their EVO conservatively over the many that run their EVO hard or Track it... All it takes is to blow a shift one time and you can cause damage to the tranny, either a gear or a Synchro.
The OEM does not make everything the best.... whether for $40K or $240K... they ALL draw the line someplace and Many look at Profit and Market Share.. OR "We Can Sell X Amount of This Type of Car in This Price Range and Make This Much Profit"..
