Anyway, it reminds me of the time a guy put on BRAND NEW street pads at the track, and proceeded to hot lap it without bedding them in. They basically crumbled into pieces...

Yeah, I have to agree it seems like abuse.

Just curious, if it was slipping continuously due to pedal preload, how would it look different? (I am not saying that's the case, simply wondering about it)

And this is the reason why the X has a weak clutch. Because idiots like that cant drive and blow up their tranny and expect Mitsu to warranty it.

BASICALLY it would look more like a worn-out clutch and less like a burned shredded one. the heat checking would be less severe as well.

Your customer should get a trophy for the first smoked clutch on an Evo X. What a waste.

the sst gearbox doesn't have a multi-plate clutch, it has 2 individual ones, one for the input shaft with the odd gears, and another for the input shaft with the even gears.

Yup, with every performance awd car Mitsu has had in the US, the clutch has been "weak" to act as a fuse for the drivetrain; its cheaper to replace a clutch than it is a tranny, transfer case, etc.

I use the quotes with weak because many have had their clutch last a long time, I myself have over 30,000 miles on my car with autocrosses and other events, and the clutch is still strong. Hell, I even learned to drive stick on my Evo.
