Check Engine Light
Check Engine Light
This morning the check engine light came on at start-up. Took it to the dealer, the code was related to timing retard at starting.
Anyone else had this happen? They told me a reset was all that was needed and no issues with the car. They said the factory people said it will happen rarely but could happen again. I suspect they will eventually have a software upgrade to correct.

There are actually two types of warnings you can get on this car now. There are the triggered CEL issues, which usually correlate to some DTC number, and then there is a whole new system. One that just forces a Service Engine Soon statement in the center multi-information display panel. The tricky part is so far, the errors that just trigger the MID, do not actually provide any OBD-II data, and require the Mitsu scanner to get codes for.
Can you give us the exact code you got please? I would like to post the information on it.

You know the exact same thing has happned to me twice now. It usually happens after the car has sat for a few days and it is always riht after start up. i do have a code reader and I have pulled it both times with the same code which is P1320

Do you know what that code is for? Is it start-up timing retard related ???
I looked up that code, and there is no safe mode for the symptom. Here is the analysis:
.
Check Conditions
• Under the ignition timing retard control.
• Engine coolant temperature is between 7°C
(45°F) and 36°C (97°F).
Judgement Criteria
• For 10 seconds, the difference between the basic
ignition timing and the target/specified ignition
timing is 3°CA or less on average during the
retard control.
.
FAIL-SAFE AND BACKUP FUNCTION
• None

As i said before this code makes no sense and it doesnt even tell what to do to fix it or anything.
I had several issues with my 03 VIII, but all were handled properly by the dealership. None the less, all cars have issues, and those issues are a lot of times influenced by your driving habits. For instance, I never had the P0300 issue on my VIII, but the guy who bought my VIII is plagued by it. I couldnt tell you why, seems like maybe he is driving it in such a way that aggravates the issue. At least he has a fully rebuilt tranny, compliments of Mitsu, and doesnt have to worry about that
I dont really care about CEL issues in a car. I would much rather have those then right out mechanical failure. I remember when the VIII came out, we had two blown trannies in just 1 month of operation. The boards were a flame with "Cheap this" and "Cheap that", but at the end of the day, the car still built, and maintains, a solid following. As such, I look at all this minor bickering as just a bunch of worthless noise that will pass.
