Which oil to use?
I got a kick out of this one. As many of you have noted the engine oil cap states
5w-30. I let the dealers service department switch my oil last week and they put in 10w-30. Not that it matters but who are they to tell me I cant change the factory standard on my car if they don't have to follow the factory standard themselves.

Not the Viscosity of the oil... Recommendation from the OEM for 5W-30 was so they could meet their CAFE.
Both oils are still a 30 wgt at Operating temps.

I run AMSOIL religiously ... engine, transmission, TC, diff and brakes. My next order will include some coolant as well simply because I haven't found any other coolant with notable benefits. I was probably one of the first people to run the AMSOIL brake fluid as I ordered it from Bob (Oil Doc) like the day it was released. Thanks again for all the help Bob.
So, yeah, I'm probably a bit of a fan boy, but it's because I honestly trust AMOSIL. As Bob said, AMSOIL directly names their competition and don't try to pull this "leading brands" crap on the consumer. The results are all over the internet. Some of them don't even put AMSOIL first in all of the tests ... but AMSOIL will get high marks (top 3) in nearly every test and that usually puts them in the number one spot overall.
When I first added AMSOIL in the engine I did notice a smoother and more responsive free rev. I had to change my rev matching technique to compensate because I was over-revving on downshifts. I haven't had my oil tested, but I change mine every 5k and I'm sure it's fine ... I could probably go 10k even with the auto-x and drag abuse the car takes.
Now, my experience is with the 4G63 and not the 4B11, so take that as you want. I can tell you that the Doc knows his stuff and won't lead you astray. He uses AMSOIL in all of his vehicles as well ... he's not just some random salesman guy pushing a random product.

All I can say is Thank You..
I will Never Knowingly lead someone astray.
Thanks again,

Just kidding ...If it helps at all, this is my maintenance list ... I believe it would be the same for the X, but I'm not certain.
Code:
Engine
o Oil - AMSOIL ATM 10W-30
Transmission
o Oil - AMSOIL MTG 75W-90 API GL-4
Transfer Case
o Oil - AMSOIL SVG 75W-90
Rear Differential

Brakes
o Fluid - AMSOIL Series 600 DOT4
Running AMSOIL in the engine and tranny. Also using the EA oil filter from AMSOIL. Engine is smoother than when I had stock oil in it. As for the reasoning. I read the reviews and after dealing with The Doc, it was a no-brainer.
Also just to spite Mitsu. If it's good enough to be OEM, there has to be better.

not sure if it was mentioned here, but you could consider getting your used oil tested to see how your engine's wearing in. blackstone labs seems to be popular. or if you want, you could check out this website which probably has way more information on fluids than you ever wanted: http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/
I see very little of much help on bitog, you get a bunch of people running random samples and jumping from oil to oil. You have no idea how an oil or your engine is performing from analysis such as that.
Personally, I use Oil Analyzers Inc. who have 3 locations in the US.

And you are correct on the OEM part, Mits or others... They choose a product primarily using cost and minimum standards as the basis.
If everything they used was "The Best" you wouldn't be able to afford the car.

Saying Mobil 1 is almost like saying I drive a Mitsubishi..... Which one ??
Mobil 1 EP, 7500, 5000... the latter are Hydro-Cracked at best...what Viscosity ? 5W-30, 10W-30, 10W-40, 20W-50 ?
Mobil 1 is a Product Line, not just one product... their filters are called Mobil 1... It is Captive Marketing Terminology...
