Unhappy AMS intake idle issues

Hello everybody! First let me say that since the day I came home with my EVO X I have been addicted to this site and have received tons of answers to questions just by reading. I planned on continuing that trend but unfortunately I have run into a snag.

This weekend I installed the AMS intake w/out breather bung and the UICP set. Everything seemed like it was running fantastic until i had the A/C on and I stopped at a light. Long story short... my idle is so bad when the engine is under load i.e. A/C, radiator fan that the car will drop to 250rpm and then stutter back to life or just flat out die.

I did the install myself and everything seems tight (haven't heard hissing and under boost the car runs great, for that matter it runs great all the time with exception of the issue as stated above) but I am at a loss for what is causing this issue.

Called AMS and they seem to think I have boost leak. I can't hear it and I have yet to do the soap and water trick.

As an aside, I only have a breather on my valve cover (the Greddy Universal catch can that I ordered is NOT SO UNIVERSAL afterall) and the Boost control vacuum line ??? that i had to disconnect is just sitting there breathing atmosphere. I tried capping it during the idle issues with no change.

Any suggestions or has anyone had the same issues??? Thanks!

seems that this may be caused by turbulant air from the fan entering the intake and upsetting the maf sensor. you can make a sheild out of a cardboard box or aluminium (if you have the means) to solve this problem.

yes, some EVO X's for some reason are hyper sensitive on the MAF to this. Some have built Shield's to put between the filter and MAF to stop this and it stops all problems.

We are working on a shield now, Another option is our soon to be released Cold air add on that will put the filter further down and you wont have that problem.

please bear with us for a little longer and we will have a couple options for you to fix this.

Eric

Eric,
It sounds like you guys are well aware of this and already on it! Do you have an ETA on either part? I am very appreciate of both replies, you guys have put me at ease a little bit. At least I know I didn't dork up the installation!
For the record, the AMS parts that I received, as stated by dozens of other happy customers, are top noch! I am very pleased with the looks, quality and performance of your guys stuff! Once my uncle (Uncle Sam) decides to start paying me a bit more I am going to be knocking on your door for many more parts!

Yeah. Go blow on the intake with the engine running and if it upsets the engine you know it's a fan issue. I have the same problem.

Don't cap the solenoid vent port. That port is there to seep out pressure from the turbo that would otherwise be sent to the wastegate and open it prematurely, causing boost to drop before it should. The only reason that that line runs into the intake is for emissions purposes since technically there are blow by gases in that air. Just disconnect that line at the solenoids themselves (two in the case of the X) and leave the port open.

Yep had the same issue. Your high speed fan is conflicting with the MAF. If you stick something between the airfilter and the fan all is good. Only does it when the fan goes to high speed. Here is the link I started on this. I have taken off the part and will be going a different route. Injen make a airfilter kit that incorporates a shield.

Thank you, we will be coming out with both in not too long. Personally I prefer the cold air pipe as it does improve HP over the short ram. The nice thing about that is you wont have to buy a whole new intake but rather an additional pipe that completes it.

The shield is also being made right now. we are just trying to find the best way to make it cost effective and completely functional.

I had this issue after first installing my AMS SRI. 08-013-11 or whatever the latest flash was, it included REVII of the April reflash, and the fix to the too rich condition, fixed me up. No issues since.
