"Hard" means occassional infrequent track, but often 1/2 mile - 4 mile sprints.
4 miles?! Hahaha. Awesome!

Top speed is 163. I only figured that out from the gearing charts available somewhere on the forum. That isn't a very high top speed, but I would rather have acceleration over top speed any day.

For the record, my X had the tick since day one, and it slowly got worse over time (12k miles currently).

The other day I was driving like a grandma and the SES light came on for a P0301 misfire in cylinder 1. I reset it in hopes that it was a freak thing, but it came back, and then shortly after the ticking got louder and the car went into limp mode. I towed it to the dealer and so far they confirmed that there is a bent/stuck valve on cylinder 1, waiting for Mitsu rep to approve warranty work. My car also would randomly idle very rough, jumping in bursts of 500ish RPM up and down.

Not saying that my case isn't isolated, but just wanted to share for future reference. I think I got a bunk engine with my car, or someone beat on it on a test drive before I got it.

I didn't think Colorado had a track that would let a mildly modified Evo X get up to 171 mph...

It's gear limited with the stock redline at 7500rpm. Have you raised your rev limiter?

haha, not a high top speed? 163 is more than double any legal speed limit in the U.S.

I meant for a high horsepower vehicle such as ours.

You have to admit the ratios in the X are hella short.

oiling issues in the head maybe....sounds like one of your lifters failed or is failing...
my car started ticking around 8k, currently at 18k and it hasnt got any louder but its still there, cant hear it while your driving but can when next to a wall at low rpms...but the tick varies with temperature
havent suffered any power loss or gas mileage loss....

once i get my k20 beast back running ima put this car on timeout until i check the lifters....

this very issue is why my sig says what it says, k20a>4b11t, its sad that mitsu can't get this right the first time and the only excuse you get is it the injectors....BS

for all others, keeping your oil clean is one good prevenative measure to keep this noise away or manage it until you fix it....
i wouldnt trust a dealer to fix this, thus ima do it myself even thou the car is still under warranty...

The 4B11 doesn't have lifters/lash adjusters. It's a direct acting valvetrain. Please at least get the basics of the engine/platform down before trying to insult Mitsubishi

I get some ticking from the valve cover, but it's no worse than any 4G6x or 6G7x I've ever worked on. My friend's Evo X is about the same. I suspect extra clearance between the valve tappets and the cam lobes is causing excessive noise in some cases.

Not tryin to insult mitsu but imo a car that cost 35k should not do this early in its life if at all..

I've never pulled the cover on mine yet....but your telling me there is nothing hydraulic in the valve train not including the mivec...

So if what your saying is correct something in our valve trains is prematurely wearing?

Still not acceptable but will have to suffice for now

I come from a honda back ground...foundation in the k series platform and never had any noise from the motor rather it makes 200hp or 1000hp....

Now b series is a different story, lol

Mrubino,

That sucks. I'm thinking about getting a 2010 evo hoping all these problems with the 08s were fixed. Seems like nothing was done and you're just hearing the ticking noise now? Wow! Bring it to the attention of the dealership you bought it from so they can make it known to Mitsubishi.

Really? You can't really be saying that a 1000hp K series doesn't have any issues...

Nothing has even happened to your 4B11T so I don't see why all the negativity. All the 8/9 guys know about the 'mitsu tick' and many of the have over 100k on their evos and are still running strong.

if i didnt like the car i would have sold it already, so we can drop it now...

jusy pointing out the flaw that shouldnt be there, thats all, ill work out a solution and report back

and yes, a 1k hp k20a doesnt have issues if built correctly....one that i work with is 2 seasons old and running strong....
but i can see why you responded they way you did...
