exhaust manifold

So when are any companies bringing out there headers or exhaust manifolds.

I was looking at ams to the prior model evo 9 and wow those headers look nice.

btw maybe a little off topic whats the difference between exhaust manifold and turbo manifold? can either be placed on a stock turbo and which one will give better results?

Yep AFI has a nice header. I myself think I'll get more bang for the buck with a set of cams since they are about same price as the AFI header so I decided to port my stock one and save up for the cams. Just waiting for Brian Crower to release his. Of course install is much worse for the cams than the manifold. By the way, I have an FP Red. With the stock turbo, not sure what the gains will be with the header since you're losing so much boost at high RPM.

We have been running our manifolds for the last 10 months and during that time we have found some issues and so we've re-designed our manifold 4 times . At the time we're waiting on some very close radius stainless bends which will allow us the make the manifold design we know works best without killing us in production time and aollow us to offer them at a fair price . The mani in our avatar worked good and looked great , the one we now run looks good but WORKS GREAT !!! If you're looking to get one a.s.a.p we cannot help you but if you can wait just a bit we can offer you the longest tested and track proven manifold on the market for an Evo X .

The biggest issue with the X rear mounted turbo is heat management. Looks will be unimportant as any kit will need serious amounts of heat shielding to keep things from melting. There has already been at least one Evo X that has caught fire due to an aftermarket tubular manifold with inadequate heat shielding.

These are the things IMO that should be most important when choosing a turbo kit for an X.

1. Heat shielding (for obvious reasons)

2. Performance (you want bang for your buck)

3. Reliability (its no fun if you break it)

4. Warranty (doing things twice is more expensive than doing them right the first time)

5. Company purchased from (a warranty is only as good as the business standing behind it)

Keeping those things in mind when deciding on your purchase should help everyone.

as a reply to the above ams quote... would ceramic coating or a similar procedure be enough to keep temps down back there on the x??

Thanks,
GAMBIT

To be perfectly honest.... no. Ceramic coating might help some but just can not hold back enough heat.

When it comes to coatings, there is not a coating out there that can stand up to the heat that a turbo car produces. ALL of the coatings we have ever tried have failed to live up to their promises. They ALL flake, discolor and end up looking like crap. On my personal car, I have the header and turbine housing ceramic coated and it still glows red hot under WOT. The thermal gains are way too small to justify the price. Once it starts flaking off.... I am sure you can see where I am going with this.

Thickness of the header / mani is the primary defense against heat. Shielding is secondary.

On the car that started fire, I believe it was the wiring to the ABS module. There are so many things near the turbo that can easily melt on the X. Depending on how a header is built / routed, things that come to mind are: CPS, MIVEC valve, valve cover gasket, engine cover, coolant hoses, vacuum lines, windshield wiper cowl, AC condensation drain, wire loom on the fire wall, ABS module, etc etc etc...

Take a look around your factory turbo and imagine if everything was larger and glowing red hot.
