Exclamation Amazing mod for EVO X MR!!! $50=22whp!

This month's import Tuner (February) has a cover story about the new MR. They found with dyno testing that just a K&N drop in filter, a MR improved by 22hp and 9tq; TO THE WHEELS!

On what they have described in the past as a 'stingy' dyno, the numbers were as follows:

EVO X MR HP TQ
Baseline 221 240
K&N 243.1 249.1

For those with a new MR, getting 22 WHP and improved economy for $50 is testament to a great platform!

Its not really a testament to a great platform, it's evidence of such a horrible stock tune that anything that leans out the AFR such as the drop in filter will gain HP.

It works for both the MR and GSR and this is a known thing already. I have been sporting the drop in for almost a year now.

I have a K&N filter and we tested it on the dyno, did a before and after run and there were 0 gains.. Wasted $50..The gains others are seeing is because the stock tune is extremely rich

At our shop we have done many intake set-ups for the MR's and GSR's and all have given us gains . The only isse I see with using a K&N filter is that the oil will cover the sensor and mess-up the reading - something which we first saw maybe 6 years ago .

A tune will lean out the X and deems an intake nearly useless except for the sound it produces when talking about the open element filter. The stock airbox suffices until you get into some serious power ranges with a larger turbo.

I would say save your money and get a tune which will give you an all around performance upgrade rather than a better peak WHP# and the horrible stock tune.

Gotta love magazines and their flawed/bullsh%t reporting. They gotta pay the bills however, and in the end, they report to their advertisers, not their readers.

No the zchip is in conjuction with the MR an GSR stock setup. i.e. Turbo. Now if they have a zChip made just for the GTS stock setup,
0 umm i dought it but not really sure.

You get gains on a stock car due to the bad factory tune the X comes with which is very rich. Drop ins or open element filters will show gains before a tune due to it leaning out the car a bit. Once the car is tuned, properly tuned and runs lean on its own, the filter is deemed useless.

EVIL_EVO_III was referring to a K&N after a tune. In other words like EVIL_EVO_III said on his tuned car he did a before filter and with filter test and there were 0 gains.

Drop-ins really should not lean anything out. Why would they? Nothing related to the MAF/MAF housing is altered. The flow entrance to the MAF is not altered. The airbox is not altered. MAYBE if the directions of the pleats altered the airflow into the MAF.

I had a measureable reduction in pressure drop, or looked at another way, a measureable increase in pressure ahead of the turbo, which will increase power. If reducing the pressure drop ahead of the turbo didn't make power, there would be no need for all the intake systems on the market.

Now, if the car is still using the factory boost control system, it will may very well not see any power gain depending on how the target loads were set. The ecu will compensate for the increased flow by reducing the boost to hit the set target loads; this is assuming it was able to hit the loads before the install of a drop-in.

Exactly, there were NO gains after my car was tuned. We did 2 runs and nothing..The reason people are seeing gains on a UNTUNED car is because the afrs are so rich that it leans it out...Save yourself the money and put the $50 towards a tune
