It seems that this might be an area where Mits could stand to spend a couple dollars on improvement. That is why you have companies such as Shep Trans, Team Rip and others building these trannies to handle the extra power.

Also, why these builders are not running a lightweight fluid, such as the New Mits Fluid which helps shifting when the tranny is cold but provides limited protection against shock load.

The X tranny's must be better (more "suitable") than you suggest since they appear to be holding up under racing conditions with the torque elevated by almost a factor of two, e.g., AMS's X!

ive had the same thing on mine when i changed my tranny fluid.... small particles of metal stuck to drain plug.... but some friends says that it was fine unless u see big chunks but mine was okay.... the funny thing is when i did the fluid drain i placed gear in first... drain gear oil... remove battery ...used a 19 socket to move plug w/ clip harness.... added 3 bottle redline gear oil...put everything back on..... then 5th and reverse dont work anymore!!! wouldnt go into 5th and reverse... so in my mind i thought wtf did i ****ed up at... its only a regular oil change.... removed battery removed nut with 19 socket placed it back in neutral...everything back together... then phew everything back to normal!! drives like a champ now!!!

Doc, are you sure that you're not thinking of the TC SST in the MR? The torque capacity of the 5 MT should be pretty beefy (wimpy clutch notwithstanding), as it was a design goal to make it much stronger than the 9's. See, on the evo 9s, the 6MT in the MR used a transmission case that was a little longer than the 5 MT in the GSR, but fitting 6 gears in there meant thinning out the gear faces to make clearance (which is why the 9 GSR's tranny was more durable than the MR's).

In the X, they used the longer transmission case from the 6 speed MR but made it a 5 speed, which allowed them to make the gear faces extra thick. As someone else mentioned, many tuning companies are making huge power out of their Xs with no issues other than the stock clutch not holding up. Don't get me wrong, I thing the tranny in this thing needs to be reworked, but I don't think it's an issue of durability, I think it's an issue of finicky synchros and/or poor fluid choice from the factory.

Maybe.. But there are sure plenty of posts about problems..

Is the tranny in AMS's car stock ?

Shep Trans and TRE sure don't use stock trannies. I don't think their TC's are stock either.

Nothing out their is perfect and their is always room for improvement. Humans design it and build it. The Space Shuttle is the Best Engineering in the World, it goes into space and comes back to Earth. Unfortunately, not always in one piece.

Could be.... As you have said, along with me and many others though... There are problems that we don't think there should be...

Repeat.... If the trannies were so good, I don't think Shep and the other trannie builders would be swapping out parts for aftermarkets.

I would like to know John at Shep's, Jon at TRE and AMS's views on the strength of the X's Tranny in higher HP apps.

Happy New Year !!!

I'd be curious as to their views on the tranny as well, and don't me wrong, if I could swap my tranny out for one buile by shep for free, I'd be all over it. I'm just saying that I think the clutch is the only real weak spot unless you are trying to build a 700hp+ drag car. Oh, and Happy New Year to you as well.

Eh I wouldn't be so quick to say that .. give it time. The motor's are great, the drivetrains are still weak. My rear end broke in a car with minor bolt on's and very few launches. Something was making a noise up front (tranny or transfer) when I traded the POS back in.

Was "a car" your X? If not, then your example is mute. As far as I know AMS's X drivetrain was OEM and they dyno'ed@ 450-490 whp and associated torque.

If you are a daily driver, no spirited driving, no tracking, just granny driving, you can go with the D-Queen GL-3 (even though there really is no such spec anymore) or AMSOIL MTF... I recommend the MTG for other than granny driving and don't tell the dealer it is in there..

Some metal shavings are going to be normal. Those look pretty fine. These are not the best trannies for what the car was built for.

But the AMSOIL website recommends that you use their MTF 5W30 oil for the transmission. A tech guy at AMSOIL said they base their recommendations to sell to us off of what Mitsubishi tells them. Isn't it bad to use something other than what the professionals at AMSOIL recommend?

I could just be paranoid. I put in AMSOIL MTG 75W90 yesterday in my X. I'm worried it's too thick and may not protect the same as the 5W30.

Yes the EVO-X has a stronger transmission and transfer case but the rear differential is not as strong as the older EVOs. The nice thing EVO-X 5speed transmission, is that has much better synchronizer assemblies that are more tolerant of these junk clutches that don't fully disengage.

MTG will be just fine.. Here is the scoop....

Yes, MTF is the matching fluid for the OEM in the new X... I am assuming you have a new 6 spd as the older models do use MTG.

AMSOIL Tech can and will only tell you OEM Spec for warranty reasons. The recommendation for MTG is mostly due to how most EVO's are driven.... HARD...
With the MTF, you will get smoother cold shifts but not as much protection as the MTG When you are at operating tempurature.

I talked this over with several driveline specialists and they agreed on this recommendation. If you drive like a granny every time, all the time, the MTF will be fine. If you drive it like the performance car it was built as, the MTG is the ticket.

ALSO, if you look at Mits's Spec, it is for a GL-3 Fluid... There is no such Rating anymore... it is antiquated.. They tell you that so you come back to buy an overpriced fluid as no one will have that spec on their labels..
