Changing ACD fluid... couple questions!

I'm changing out the ACD fluid with AMSoil ATF and I have a couple questions:

-if I just pull the drain plug on the diff is there going to be a need to bleed anything after refilling it as we are dealing with a hydraulic system...??

-if pulling the drain plug doesn't completely drain the reservoir, is it ok to just pump out the old fluid from the reservoir and refill it with the AMSoil ATF after draining the ACD?

If anyone can help out that would be great!

Thanks in advance!!

Are you talking about changing the rear axle oil? The one that's part of 30K maintenance. In that one, you change to oil in the differential part and the torque part separately. In the service manual, it doesn't say anything about refilling the ACD reservoir or bleeding the system.

Unless I'm thinking of a different maintenance item.

I think you have to bleed it

EDIT: Nevermind.

idk about the X's but i dont remember the ACD fluid needing to be changed unless there was a problem... but for the record you have to bleed it, and it is auto tranny fluid, idk what the other guy is talking about but the ACD and its pump use ATF, hence why its that thicker shade of red

personally i would stick with oem fluids, the acd you do not need to bleed. i changed it on my old 9mr around 16k miles or so. but remove the drain bolt and the fill bolt, let the fluids drain. replace the drain bolt and fill with fluids until fluid starts the seep out of the fill hole, mitsu recommends that you do this on level ground so you don't overfill the acd unit.

You are right. I was under the impression that the ACD shared fluid with the transfer case since it's inside the transfer case, but it looks like the reserve tank in the trunk of the X labeled "AWC" fluid is actually for the ACD. Is this an overflow tank, or a reserve tank? I assumed it was a backup reserve tank for the AYC until now. Hmmm, the manual says nothing about it.

The item in the warranty and maintenance manual says that it is for the ACD and AYC. I think it uses the same kind of oil so it's a reservoir for both apparently.

Update: I reviewed the service manual and just drained it and then refilled it. I then pumped out the reservoir and refilled with the AMSoil ATF. No problems whatsoever.

When you drain the OEM ATF fluid out of the rear differential (torque converter part), does it drain the ACD within the transfer case as well as the ACD/AYC reservoir in the trunk?

If not, when do you replace the OEM ATF in the ACD in the transfer case? Because the ACD and the xfer case use 2 different oils.

No to both. When I replaced the fluids, the only thing area that received the AMSoil ATF was the torque converter in the rear diff and the reservoir. The transer case up front was drained and then filled with AMSoil SVG. Check out Oil Doc's website for what fluids you can use to change out the OEM fluids:

I know what is put in the transfer case. I already did that for 15K maintenance. I'm asking if you ever change the fluid in the ACD? Or does the ACD even hold fluid? I was told that the ACD acts similar to brakes as in fluid activates the ACD and isn't always full.

When you drain the torque converting part of the rear diff, doesn't that drain the reservoir in the trunk as well?

From what I gather, you never change the ACD fluid. Just check the level.

Unless you want something other than the OEM ATF fluid.

this is correct. amsoil atf in the tq converter part of the rear diff. no it does not drain the acd reservoir.
