is this normal or do i have a boost leak?

I just installed my Nisei 1Pc UICP tonite. The install was very easy and straight forward. Made sure everything is bolted down nice and tight (Maybe too tight on the tube?). After the install I took the car out for a test drive. Now every time I go beyond 3K rpm I hear a whistling noise almost. I think its the turbo spool being more audible now because of the UICP but please correct me if im wrong. Here are some short video of my test drive. First one is with the windows down, second with windows all up.

Video with windows down

Wideo with Windows Up

That sound I hear in your video (which it's tough to tell because of the sound quality from a digi cam) doesn't sound like turbo hiss to me. It sounds like a whine. If you're car feels like it's pulling like it did before or harder than you probably don't have a leak. Best way to test would be to get a boost gauge and watch your psi.

yeah, i figured it didnt sound normal. Im gonna check the clamps today and make sure that they are tight enough or that the pipe are fully inserted in the rubber tubes.

(Sorry about the video quality)

Please tell me you didn't drop anything into the turbo right? Sounds like bent fins on the turbo to me.

No i made sure nothing fell in there. All the nuts, bolts, clamps and stock pieces are all account for. Tools are also accounted for. The noise happens past 3k or when im hard on boost.

I would still pull the intake off and look at the fins...

Of course if that did happen, there isn't much that you could do to fix it. I'm not trying to scare you but I have never heard an IC pipe cause that type of noise before.

sure, i understand what you are saying. I am planning to take off the pipe and make sure all is good. My gutt feeling is that i might have left a clamp loose and allows some of the pressure to leak through the rubber fittings = "Whistle" noise. Hopefully its nothing worse the a loose clamp.

Air travels in the other direction. He installed a pipe from turbo to IC, not an intake MAF tube. There's nothing in that path that can get to the fins.

we have our first S/C'ed Evo X.............T/S you have a STOCK INTAKE, you not gonna hear your turbo... you hear a "different" noise now cause of your UICP, but again your not gonna hear your turbo untill you get a filter kit or a full intake..

Noize, I know which way the air travels, but droping in a screw into the outlet of a turbo could damage the blades, but your right that looking from the input side would not neccessarily show the damage if the damage was on the back side.

At any rate, I am glad it was a simple fix, and I'm sorry if I scared ya.

HAHA yeah it does sound like a S/C Evo! I only have the Works Drop in Filter, so the turbo spool is more audible.

No worries tsitalon1, its all good in the neighborhood!!!

Pretty much every 10 that have upgraded their IC pipes have had a boost leak when I put them on the dyno. Usually at the coupler from the pipe to the FMIC as it's a bit tricky to get a tool in there.

Make sure you always get the clamps lined up correctly and tight but not too tight as to ovalize the pipes.

The last 10 that had that boost leak picked up 25whp after fixing it.
