best bang for buck - power wise???

Hi Guys,

Ok so my X is on the way

Now I promised I wouldn't mod it (much) so I want to do the bare minimum to get more power out of it.

So far here are the things I have read that make the best power for cheapest spend:

* drop in filter
* catback or gut the muffler
* UICP

Anything else I should add to the list?

Forget about the tune - I will be tuning/retuning everyday hehe

Cheers
D.

is the evo x cat restrictive? the ix cat certainly wasn't too bad - and probably not worth the $$$'s to change it over.

can't do a test pipe since the $10,000 fine wouldn't be worth it if i was caught hehe

The stock catback is both heavy and restrictive IMO (not to mention awfully quiet ).

1. drop in filter
2. UICP (helps hold boost)
3. cat back

I put ams cat back on with the stock cat, and I felt no difference. When I put the test pipe on, it was a noticable difference that I could feel in acceleration. I think the stock cat is very restrictive.

cat back and a test pipe seem to have great results.

I should mention this is all after tune.

I don't really care if a specific part doesn't give results on its own - I DO care if it allows more timing or more boost... (ie more power after tune )

Any specific numbers for parts, ie
catback + tune allowed extra 20hp over tune alone.

Basic mods in the order of power they increase:

1) Tune
2) Cat delete/ test pipe
3) Upper intercooler pipe
4) cat-back exhaust
5) Full downpipe that eliminates the factory O2 housing
6) Boost pill/assembly
.
.
.
.
.
7) Drop in filter

The filter's ability to increase power has more to due with the restrictive stock tune. If you tune the car, its effect is lessened substantially.

sure - but i want to spend the $$$'s wisely.

no point in doing the catback if the cat is restrictive (except for noise factor :P)

mrfred - no e85 yet!

Then don't even bother with a drop-in filter. Before tune it adds 15-20whp because of changing the AFR/timing.

After tune it does almost nothing. I tested it by tuning a 100% bone stock 10. Then I added a drop-in filter and it gained 10whp but leaned out the AFR .4

I retuned it to bring the AFR back inline to how I tuned it and the filter ended up gaining 3whp way up top with no gains anywhere else in the curve.

The tune will be the biggest bang for the buck, 50-70whp just from the tune alone.

Add a boost pill upgrade for more area under the curve which the cool kids know makes a much faster car. You also get some peak hp gains as well.

I don't see catbacks making a large gain on the 10's by themselves, for the price the Evo 10 catbacks go for it's not really worth it in my book if you are just doing the catback, unless you want the sound.

Welcome to Evo 10 land. I can't wait to see Tephra mods for it.
