Question Problem With Sport and Super-Sport Modes

I just bought my MR last week, and I'm having an issue with the sport and super-sport modes. They only seem to work sporadically. Other times, instead of shifting and running at higher RPMs, it seems to be doing the complete opposite. Example - I'll be in sport or super-sport mode and the computer has the car in 6th gear at 40 mph. Has anyone else had similar issues? Is this a computer issue that the dealership can easily remedy? Thanks in advance for any input.

hey, did they give you a good deal over in michigan?? I'm originally from there and I got an OK deal here in chicago.

How many miles were on the car when you bought it?

So far my MR has never gone to 6th gear in sport mode less than 60mph.

I thought I got a pretty good deal. 33k plus 0% for 5 years...only 35 miles on the car. I'm going to take it in to the dealership...hopefully its just a simple computer reflash.

Bump...

I'm still having the same problem eight months after buying the car. The problem seems like it has to be computer-related. It happens everytime I start the car, then it goes away after 2-4 minutes. For the first 2-4 minutes, the vehicle shifts at ridiculously low rpms, which gets me to sixth gear at 40-45 mph and obviously provides for very sluggish driving (shifts at 2000-2500 rpms). Then suddenly the vehicle corrects itself and downshifts to the proper gear. I've taken it to two different dealerships...both of which blew me off and told me that this is normal. I'm pretty sure this is bull**** given that I haven't seen anyone else complaining about this on here. The other thing that is pissing me off is that the dealers are telling me that they can't reflash the ecu to try to correct the problem. I'd appreciate it if anyone can give me some advice.

When the car is cold it shift early in both sport and s-sport. This is a good thing, programming goes back to normal when engine is at temp.

Yea this is correct. The car shifts much sooner when just started up and not up to normal operating temps.... regardless of normal - sport -ssport. I dont let my car shift past 3k-4k rpm for the first 3-4 minutes of a start up. Warm up and cool down for turbo cars is a fairly big deal and should be done as much as possible.

IMO, this car was made to be shifted manually although there is an automatic mode. Im in manual mode about 95% of the time. The only time Im in auto is when the car is still warming up.

Completely normal to shift early on warm up. It also runs minimum boost during warm up if you haven't noticed, about 11-12psi. This reduces wear on engine parts when the engine is still cold, which is a good thing.

Thank you to everyone for your responses. I wish the Mitsubishi technicians were half as knowledgeable as the people on this board. That's a perfectly reasonable explanation, and one that could have been given to me by one of their techs months ago. Thanks again.

In my MR, when the car is fully warmed up ( i warm it up only in normal mode)

When i flick the switch to SPORT MODE (auto mode) - the car will downshift to the necessary gear and the RPM will be at 3500-4000 ALWAYS, it will never drop lower unless your MANUALLY controlling the gears.

In S-Sport or Super Sport ( auto mode), the car hold every GEAR till redline.

Sounds like there is computer problem with your car.

There would be a computer problem if it did let you take the car to higher rpms (+5000 rpms) before fully warmed up. But since it shifts sooner than your expecting as the motor and trans warms up, then its doing its job correctly.

I just dont understand why anyone would want to rev the crap out of their motor within the first 4 or 5 minutes of starting it......

SST logic doesn't allow early shifting in warmup mode ..

The gearbox fluids also needs to warmup too ..

The engine is only partially restricted when it is cold .. you still can rev to redline ..

If you toggle to SPORT or SSPORT during warmup .. the gearbox will do what it is told to do .. ie either shift at 4000rpms or redline .. obviously you'd be running in the restricted power you mentioned ..
