Upgrade Turbo?
In the process of installing my new O2 downpipe my turbo had to be taken out, that's not totally unexpected. The thing is now Tobz gave me the option of upgrading the turbo(FP Red) in the car since the stock turbo is sitting on His table and it would be the perfect time to upgrade it. My only question is my car is has the SST Tranny in it, would I be making a mistake by putting it in?
Just a thought, but at under 25psi, the FPRed seems to actually make less [peak] torque than the stock turbo. The gains are all in the upper RPM range or high PSI applications. If torque is what kills trannies, not HP, you should be OK.
That said, the stock turbo is great, especially in automatic, so why not just stick with that?

I honestly think an FP Red will be too much on the MR's Tranny.
We have pushed a few MR's on the stock turbo to roughly 310wtq on our dyno(dyno dynamics) and the tranny clutch started slipping slightly.
You can go low boost but if we can make the tranny slip on the stock turbo, an upgraded turbo for sure would be a waste of money IMHO!
Push the stock turbo until the tranny slips, then back off about 10wtq and you should be good to go. Utilize what you have first! Save your $$$

To those who've read my original reply I've changed my mind.
I'm going to get the FP Red now(with it tuned not to destroy my tranny) then save up for clutch packs/tranny cooling, meanwhile no track time but instead the occasional very wide grin on my face.

Hell yeah, man! I'm curious to see at what psi it slips. I actually think you'll be OK, since it won't be a torque monster like a tuned stock-turbo could be. I'm over 380WHP but under 340 ft-lbs with a Red. Power keeps building after 4K.
To those that have tuned these, do they slip high in the RPM band or low, or just at peak TQ?

AMS just posted their dyno graph of their project RA w/ FP Red upgrade, and its SST held up fine. But as previously posted, the power was in the the higher RPMs, and the TQ numbers were low....
I lined up against this car at Great Lakes, when it first ran 12s on the stock turbo. It would definitely give me a run for my money now
Kinda scary from an RA.If torque is a limiting factor on the SST, then that's all the more reason to try an FP Red. Tune it for high RPM power.
