Tubular Manifold Sound Clip/Video Request
Tubular Manifold Sound Clip/Video Request
I've searched extensively twice and I found one video of a car in Dubai with a Full-Race manifold and HKS exhaust... sounded pretty gross, so I'm looking for a good exhaust clip of an Evo X with a Full Race or other tubular manifold to see how the sound changes in addition to a turbo back.
I know it sounds stupid (no pun intended) but I love the sound of my Evo X currently and for the power gains involved, I would likely stick with the stock manifold if going tubular makes the X sound like garbage.
This is the video I found:

Sounds OK until up top where it gets raspy. I think it would sound much better with a single, more free-flowing exhaust.
So if you have videos or sound clips, please post them up! Thanks guys!

I would wait till SteedSpeed finishes up his manifold for our cars. I think speedcircuit will be the ones selling them but I would suggest them over a tubular manifold
It has EWG capabilities but you can also just block it off and run with an internal waste gate. As well you will be able to put all your stock heat shields back on for the stealth look that your dealership won’t be able to see unless they are really looking for it.
I have seen his products first hand as his shop is only a few minutes from me, as well my friend has a HorsePowerFreaks turbo kit on his M3 which uses SteedSpeed's manifolds and they are works of art and work very well

Excellent feedback, thanks! I'd love to hear a sound clip or video if you'd be kind enough to make one.

And I agree with you. I like the growl in the exhaust and I wouldn't want to make it buzzy and raspy. The SteedSpeed manifold should flow very well but it has unequal length runners like the stock manifold, so it should sound identical.

ahah each to their own I guess.. But like ScottSpeed21 said you can go right to that link I posted and buy it. They may be unequal runners but each runner has its own passage right from the head to the turbo so you don’t get one of the cylinders pushing back into the other like the OEM manifold does.
The raspy sounds is from then equal length headers setup and will usually make more top end power that way. For most of us unequal length headers or "close enough" will keep the sounds the same and if the rest of the design is correct will make close to the same horsepower anyways.
The ETS tubular exhaust manifold which I had before was slightly raspier than stock but when you are trapping 119+ it doesn't matter so much. The runners were pretty close to equal on that setup and the larger 48mm outer diamter of the piping was good for mid and top end power. The only reason I swapped it was because I thought it had a leak but turns out it was my gasket and the internal wastegate area.
The Full-Race manifold that I got from Force-Fed Performance was shipped ahead of schedule which floored me and so far has been more low end torque and equal on the mid and top end power wise. I may have even gained a little up top but it's hard to say because it's within the difference that the External Wastegate O2 DP may have helped hold boost better. The runners are 42mm outer diameter and somewhat close to equal length, but not quite so sound output is more similar to stock.
I took comparison pictures with the two side by side and will likely do a full writeup once I have all the data.
Full-Race left, ETS right:

Good to know the Full-Race isn't exactly equal length and should keep the stock-ish sound. I understood how equal length runners affected the sound of the 4G63, but I've also built turbo cars with completely unequal length runners that ended up sounding raspy. Thing is, the 4B11 has a much different sound than the 4G63. Has more to do with head flow dynamics than anything, I'm sure, but I don't want to sacrifice that unique sound for a few WHP.
I've felt plenty of 500+ WHP rush before, I just want my car to be pleasant to my ears this time around as well.
BTW, sound clips or videos would be superb! Some of you guys have some really nice setups but no videos... sad
