Can you hear the turbo and BOV with the AEM intake?

I am running a generic cone filter, and love that I can now hear the turbo and BOV. However I am considering a Cobb AP, and want to upgrade to one of their supported intakes, which are AEM, AMS, and Injen.

As far as I can tell the Injen is only sold with the UICP which drives the cost up a bit, the AMS is way overpriced for what it is, and the AEM is effectively a closed box.

Does the fact that the AEM is a closed box mean that it acts like the stock airbox, meaning no BOV and turbo sound? Or is there something about it that allows the turbo and BOV sounds out?

Hopefully someone that has one can chime in.

Thanks.

It sounds like the stock box intake. You can't hear it pull in air. That's what you're hearing with the standard cone filter w/ out a box. It's not the turbo or the BOV.

That's a shame about not hearing it with the AEM, so I guess that rules it out for me.

But you're wrong about the cone filter, you do hear the turbo spooling up and you do hear the BOV shooting the air out. Many many people here with open air filters can attest to that.

You can leave the lid off the AEM and hear all you want. Then you can slap the lid on and sound stock again.

Hadn't thought of that, does that really work? Although I wonder if there are any adverse affects to that, like water collecting in there or something.

not to the full effect. just having the lid open produces a strange thud like noise when i used to have the AEM. If you want the most sound I would get an AMS intake

That's not good. The AMS looks nice but frankly it is extremely overpriced IMO. I'll keep looking around for better deals.

I have the lid off my AEM and it didn't collect any more than a couple drops in it the last time we had some rain for a few days. I also have no idea what the previous poster is talking about with the "thud" noise. I can hear the turbo spooling and the BOV with the lid off, but I don't think it is as loud as some of the open-filtered cars I've heard on YouTube and whatnot. Although it is always hard to really tell how loud they are in person from the videos.

It won't collect water, because there is a hole in the bottom to drain it.

The AMS cold air intake on my girlfriend's X sounds soooo sick! You can really hear the turbo and BOV.

Yeah I saw that but it doesn't with a heat shield, and by the time you add one it costs about the same as others. And the others come with a turbo inlet hose which if I purchased one for the Cobb would make it even more expensive.

I'm probably just going to install the cobb intake stage 1 map and log and see what happens. If it has issues I will bite the bullet and buy the overpriced AMS.

Yeah there are lots of nice intakes on the market, they're just not supported by Cobb which is my issue.

AEM isn't loud because there is nothing for the sound to vibrate off of. It's all made of 'plastic' so it doesn't echo. If you were to replace their turbo intake pipe with a metal one it would sound louder.
