Intake question
Intake question
So im considering the ETS intake or the ams intake for my 2010 X and i was wondering if it would cause any harm to my car if i put it on and ran it without a tune since the car is daily driven.
A lot of people will say you need a tune but you don't... I have yet to hear of an engine blowing up from just adding an intake... Also check out the Harmon Motive intake if your looking at AMS... Exactly the same just $100 or so cheaper and it comes standard with all the bungs you need to just bolt it on and go where as with the AMS intake thoughs are all extra $$
^^one of the reasons why they are suggesting that get a tune with an intake (like AMS or Harman Motive) is because intakes that changes the size of the maf housing messes with your STFT's and LTFT's..
intakes that utilizes the stock maf housing like nisei, br, etc. "can" technically be installed without a tune..but then again not all cars are alike..so that's why it is recommended to have your car tuned.

I would be more careful about doing an intake without a tune on the 2010's than an '08 because the tune is leaner. I don't know how much leaner, but it is a good bit.
Like the OP said, I haven't seen an intake blow a motor on a X yet, but the '08's tune is **** rich so that probably why.

For example, if you got your car tuned by a crappy tuner, and it caused your car to run ultra lean resulting in a blown engine, then I can see that voiding your warranty.
But if you got your car tuned, and you brought it back for recalls and they see that your ECU has been tampered with, that could depend on the dealer.
i spoke with a tuner a week or two ago, we were talking about the A/F ratio out of the factory and the tuner said it's like 9:2. So... if an aftermarket intake causes you to run a little bit more lean, shouldn't be too bad...
you will be fine, i drove around for a couple of months with no tune, it will run kinda weird at idle might jump a wee bit but nothing to worry about you will be fine but another reason to get it tuned is to just make more hp a tuner can pump out a ton more extra horsepower by tweaking things so its always good to get a tune!

** Works with stock intercooler piping!!
We don't have the problem with the crazy idle due to the shield we provide. Attached is a graph of our dyno sheet with no tuning, bolting the intake on and putting on a boost controller (22psi).

56whp over stock!! No Tuning!!

We also use a 5.0" inlet that returns back into the stock MAF housing so you won't need to rescale the MAF with the ETS intake. Our filter has one of the largest surface areas on the market!
This intercooler will not fit the Ralli-Art, but we do have an intake for the RA not yet on our site! Send a PM if interested.
