Tin can rattle coming from rear
Tin can rattle coming from rear
So i basically pissed away a whole day of work by having to go to the dealer for a ghost sound. In a torrential downpour this AM on the freeway I heard a loud noise coming from the back of the car, sound liked metal was hitting each other, like a tin can going."ting, ting,"...No vibrations or anything out of the ordinary, just the noise. It did it 3 times on the freeway and was soo loud i pulled over and called roadside assistance to flat bed me to the dealer. Obviously, they spent all afternoon with it and could not re-produce the sound and neither could I when we went out together............Could the massive amounts of water on the road have caused something to vibrate??? i assume if it was a driveline problem that the noise would be consistent, correct????? Anyone and everyone with input let me know, I drove all of the way home with no issues either?????
My initial guess was an exhaust heat shield rattling, but that should be the first thing Mitsu checked out. Possibly the heat shield completely came off and that is why they could not replicate the noise or visually find anything abnormal. If the noise is gone then I would not worry. However, if it does return remember the driving conditions it occurs in and any other information to help diagnose the problem. The issue is now documented with Mitsu so if it does come back they will be obligated to resolve the issue before putting it back on the road.
