^ it would be utterly pointless to use stock rods. They will fail.

So if I'm just getting a tune I need to change rods? and the best rods in the world will fail sometimes. again this thread is about 4B11 VS 4G63 stock internals.

No, your post comparing the rods was off-topic so I find it amusing that you're trying to be a topic ****. The OP wanted a discussion of which motor was stronger as a whole and isolating a single component doesn't answer that question.

your the one who first intro rods to this thread in post #10, now I'm amused, and I agree with your last sentence, which is why I posted the two part 4B11 info. Comparing 4G63 and 4B11 rods isn't off topic, their both engine internals, notice where the op asked about strengthened 4B11 internals? the rods are one of them.

From what I have seen the 4g63 could be a tad more resilient, but they are both fairly stout.

I wouldn't buy one over the other if it was up to making power on the stock block, they both a very capable of being fast.

Motor builds still cost the same after you blow the stock one up

My evaluation after seeing the last 4-5 Blown up 4b11 is this.. Its my opinion the 4b11 while it could be as strong or stronger than the 4g63 stock it does not have the same room for error with poor tuning.. all of the blown 4b11's i have seen recently were a product of a poor tune.. The 4g63 seems to handle a crap tune much better.. I havent seen very many blown 4g63 at 350-400hp in 3 years but 1 evo X after the other has rolled in blown up due to poor tuning in the last 2 months.. Most of them with cracked pistons. I havent had 1 with rods out of the block yet.. most have been poor tunes or customers who like to raise boost to whatever level they want to and hope for the best after the tune..

Very interesting Mike!

Have you found any consistent area of the tune that is bad? IE - Running lean, bad mivec, knock >x, high timing.

Do you think that more strict emissions compliance is a factor with cracked pistons in a moded 4b11? What is your opinion of the 4b11 pistons?

Isn't the 4B11 pistons inherently weaker due to being of a ULEV design?

In the two part article I posted it says they are "Forged Mahle Pistons"

ylou will never see forged pistons in stock american cars because big dummies floor their cars with cold engines. i see it every day all the time. big dummies start their car and are pressing the gas so hard without it warming up. if they have forged pistons theyd have to put so much clearance to account for all these big dfummies youd have massive oil consumption. we pay the price for the dummies costing us good things again like most things in life a few dummies in this csae a lot ruin it for all.

The 4B11 is a really stout motor. I know this thread is old and a lot has been discovered since it started.

^bad ***, I'm glad you brought this back because I'm looking at the evo X once again and when I was reading a few years ago... People were saying how weak the rods / pistons were. Could you elaborate a bit more?

I'm not sure about this......... The only things that have been discovered are the fact that there are even more weak points then we thought. Rods..... cam chains...... broken pistons...... These things blow up stock.
