mods questions

Hey guys. I'm a new evo owner, been a honda guy my whole life and finally decided to upgrade to a real car haha. I have a basic idea of how turbo systems work but still very much a newb when it comes to modding and tuning them. The car will be a DD for the most part, but i want it so sound nice and move when i want. It will see some Auto x events, 2-3 a season, kinda hard to make them due to work schedule, and the occasional highway pull.

Power wise i have been looking at getting the ETS turbo back exhuast, as well as their intake kit. and a hard IC pipe kit, not sure on brand (leaning towards cobbs due to price for the whole IC kit not just the upper pipes). I know having all these parts will require a tune, just not sure what parts i can run with the stock ecu? would running just the intake and hard pipe kit be ok? Or is it only safe to run a cat back with the stock tune?

And with the mods i have listed is there any other parts i would need to keep the car running safe? such as fuel pump, bigger injectors and such?

any help or advice would be great guys

thanks

Hi,

First, congrats on getting an evo, its a sweet ride, esp coming from a honda. Also, thank you for typing in complete sentences and paragraphs, it makes me actually want to help you :-)

To answer your questions, you *could* run the car w/ an intake without a tune, but really the best results will be for you to get a custom tune on the ETS turbo-back exhaust, intake, and intercooler kit (I would recommend getting the upgraded IC rather than just the hard pipes. If you don't want to spend the money, get the ETS pipes and then later on get the new IC core). A custom tune with these parts would net you somewhere around the 350/350 mark.

So long as you're running pump gas rather than e85, no fuel system mods will be necessary. If you wanted to run e85 (30-40 extra hp/tq) you would need a walbro 255 pump (cobb sells a nice kit) and 800cc injectors. Larger if you want a larger turbo, but for auto-x the stock turbo is recommended.

Whatever you decide, set your exact goals, and then plan the build around them. Get all the parts together, then install and tune it once - I cannot tell you how much money you can waste paying 400 per tune if you buy parts one at a time and need a new tune for each :-)

Happy modding!

Agreed about the tuning thing.

Get ALL your mods together and then install them all at once with 1 tune. It gets ridiculous pretty fast.

thanks for the responses guys. haha I hate people that can't type in coherent sentences too

E85 isnt really available here in the north east so i will be sticking with pump gas

I have made that mistake before as well, so i def plan on getting all the parts put on and tuned once rather than 2-3 times.

are there any good BOV that work with the recirc setup the X has? wouldnt mind getting some better sounds out of the car as well

an intake will make the turbo/bov much louder. there is no need to replace the stock bpv unless you're running 30+psi, so don't waste your money. I would recommend a 3-port boost controller however.

ok thanks for the tip. would the boost pill need to be removed if that 3-port boost controller is installed?

not if you're getting a custom tune. If you're using a cobb ap and OTS maps, you cannot use a 3port. But really, there aren't AP maps for ets intakes, so with a custom map, have your tuner do whatever they want as far as the pill.

isn't iveytune somewhere near you? I'd go there above anyone in the NE.

Pay more for a shop that knows what it's doing. Sean Ivey has a perfect reputation in the evo world, and everyone regards him as one of the top 3-4 tuners. Their prices won't be higher by much if anything, but the peace of mind will be worth a ton. It's a 5-10K engine you're playing with, don't risk blowing it :-)
**not saying the shop you mentioned was risky, in fact I've never heard of them, jusy saying ivey is one of the best**

The reason cobb doesn't have a tune for our intake is it uses the factory MAF housing and doesn't require rescaling.

here is a good link with our upgrades and no tuning.

Tuning will net you a little more power and a bunch more torque

Go with ETS everything just like you said, and then get a custom tune from something or another...

Sorry for reviving this but I just gotta clear this up. I plan on getting full bolt-ons over the course of months and will definitely get tuned. But I want to buy a TBE w/testpipe, and drive around for awhile until I get more parts to make the tune "worth it". Would I be okay to do this for a little while (maybe 2 months) without serious repercussions?
