Wife needs a new clutch
Wife needs a new clutch
My wife drives a 08 GSR and we cannot stand the clutch that is in the car. It has a Exedy stage 2 HD. The car has a FP red in it and it's making pretty good power still needs a few more things to get to the power level where it should be. In the next few months the injectors are going up to 1000's, cosworth cams, test pipe and removing that damn silencer out of the exhaust.
I'm new to the evos and don't know tons about them yet. I have used different clutches but I don't exactly know how they act in these cars.
I have done some searching but I need some insight. I'm guessing I need an organic disk to keep the engagement as smooth as possible but I don't want the pedal to be super stiff.
We are looking for a clutch that has more daily driving capabilities and feels as close to stock as possible. We have tons of traffic in the area and I have a busted left ankle.
Does anybody have any advice?
Thx in advance

try looking at the ACT Street disk.... works also makes a full face and so does spec. alot here run either the ACT 6 puck or the Street disk... others that have the cash run the Exedy twins.
just plan to have the CMC replaced with a magnus kit. the oem will breaek at some time. just depends on the clutch, as to how long it lasts.

I have an ACT HDSS sitting in my house right now. I thought my clutch slipped one day and ordered a clutch right then. 6 months later my clutch is still fine.
I would think that the HDSS should be ok for you. Some people mighty say it won't be enough for your Red, but I believe it is rated somewhere between 450-500wtq.
The ACT HDSS is going to prolly be as close to stock feel, quiet, and smooth as any aftermarket clutch out there.
I order mine from Maperformance, along with there flywheel, for like 800 something all together.

I think I might go with the ACT for her. The main thing I was wondering is if it felt the same as my ACT and RPS street clutches from my old 400+ tq STI.
All I can say is thats it's hard as hell to back the evo up our steep driveway with that exedy stg 2 hd
Thanks again for the info

Well I pulled the trigger and ordered the ACT HDSS w/ an ACT Streetlite flywheel. Thanks for the heads up on MAPerformance they cut a heck of a deal on both shipped.
We shall see how the clutch holds up once I get the rest of the parts for more PSI

After I had the ACT HDSS installed, I couldn't tell the difference from the stock feel.
Should have gone exedy twin disk. I hear about lock out from the act's although I have never driven one but I've got plenty experience with the exedy twin and the stage 2. The engagement and chatter in the stage two is awful I hate it. But the twin disk is smooth as butter.
I have a Spec Stage 2+ with the Magnus CMC kit (makes clutch a tad heavier vs stock CMC) and ACT Streelite flywheel. pedal weight is pretty much identical to my sister's stock 08 STi (she can go test drive one of those to get an idea of how heavy the pedal weight is). Engagement is a little rougher than stock, it has about 1" of clutch slip area (from starting to grab to fully engaged). according the Specs website the 2+ is good for 500 lb tq or something like that
I've driven an Evo X with an ACT street clutch with the stock CMC and it was considerably heavier than my Spec is. I have a bad right knee, so clutch pedal weight is a pretty big issue for me. I know a ton of people say "ACT is just a little heavier than stock, blah blah blah", simply put they're full of sh*t. its alot heavier, plain and simple. If I bought the ACT clutch before testing it, I'd be spending the money for new clutch and install again...
edit: just saw this:
honestly, if a heavy pedal is an issue for her don't bother installing it. try to get it exchanged for a Spec (same pressure plate upto 3+, different friction material). I guess you don't have to get a Spec, but I have personal experience with it and the ACT, and the ACT is heavy, no way around it. if I was a vendor i'd go as far as offering a personal guarantee as far a pedal pressure satisfaction.
I know i sound like a spec fan boi, but i'm more of an ACT hater, and only cause of my knee not being able to deal with a heavy clutch. and also why have a heavy clutch when you can have a lighter one do the same thing...

I thank everyone for their input and I think if the ACT doesn't work out then I think I might try the exedy twin. But I don't think anything can be as bad to daily as the clutch it already has.
But if it does work it will probably take forever to wear out because my wife is super easy on her clutches. She had a Mazdaspeed 3 with 70k miles stock clutch, 300whp&tq. and she even raced that car.

Cargomech let us know how the ACT feels for you and your wife. I'm borderline ready to order this too, and my wife also drives my car occasionally.
