Tuning problems with AMS cold air intake & TurboXS BCS
Hey everyone!
I took my 2011 GSR into get tuned this week after installing several bolt ons. As my mechanic was tuning the car he kept on noticing that the car would have a fuel spike every time he raised the boost in between runs. After an hour or so he concluded that it was the AMS cold air intake I had selected to use for this build.
His recommendation was to switch over to another style intake that did not go all the way down into the bumper to solve the issue (AMS, ETS, whatever) and complete the tune the way he wanted and to achieve the numbers he thought I could achieve.
Has anyone heard of this problem before? Is there an alternative to switching to another intake? I trust what he says, but I’d hate to waste all my efforts with this current intake.
Here is a photo of the intake in question.

I really cannot see why this intake would cause these issues... I would say it has something to do with your boost solenoids or what ever you are currently using to control your boost rather than this intake.
This intake and the others that extend down into the wheel well and out of the engine bay in my opinion/experience are the best style out of them all. You get fresh cool air and there is no box to cause turbulence issues.

Who's your tuner? Does he have experience scaling larger than stock MAF housings on the X?
Also, the gold foil on your UICP is counter-productive, that pipe is a hot charge pipe meaning the air inside it is hotter than the engine bay temperature. You want that pipe to help dissipate the heat, not retain it.

I prefer not to through my tuner underneath the bus, as he is one of the top tuners ( out of two) in my area. He strictly specializes in Mitsu and Subaru.
As for the foil it dissipates heat, but does not allow it to come into the pipe. It serves as a heat shield not a thermal insulator. I get what you're saying, but figured it wouldn't hurt.

Boost solenoid install experiences (good or bad)
Hey everyone!
I was wondering if anyone could share their experience with installing and tuning an aftermarket boost solenoid on the Evo X. I installed a Turbo XS Dual Boost Solenoid this week on my X and have been having issues with fuel spikes when raising the boost during the tune.
Let me know if you have any questions about how it was installed. I did the wiring and my mechanic mounted it, hooked up the vacuum lines, and tuned it.
I am trying to rule out whether it’s the booost solenoid, my cold air intake, or another part that was recently installed.
Here is a pic!

Thanks for your feedback!

The intake you are using is on a lot of other cars making very good power so I don't know how it would cause issues for you when its just a filter and some tubing... I am sure your tuner is awesome but as I have run into in the past and even with my car, good tuners don't always know what they are talking about when it comes to mechanical issues... They can produce unreal tunes but couldn't build a car or do anything mechanical on one. This may be one of those cases. When I was having my car tuned there was an issue that turned out to be a mechanical one. He explained to me what he was seeing/the issue was and I fixed it and he finished his tune. I know how to build engines and do that kind of stuff but I can't tune so I leave that to the people who know how to but because of this, I don't bother trying to make tuning suggestions....

Thats not a boost solenoid like we know it
its 2 manual controllers that you can swap between HI/LO style
please remove that and install the stock stuff + a boost pill from AMS or a #port from grimspeed or Prodrive/perburg/tactrix.

Thanks! I just checked out the AMS website and in its description for the boost pill it states
"AMS strongly recommends the use of the AMS Lancer Evolution X / Ralliart Boost Pill for any vehicle equipped with the SST transmission. Because of the highly advanced clutch engagement and disengagement of the SST transmission; Manual and Electronic boost controllers are highly inconsistent causing severe boost spikes and inadequate boost control resulting in poor drivability and possible engine failure."
I am not running an SST transmission as my car is a GSR... is this pill still safe and useful?

We have had great results using the Grimmspeed boost solenoids in the Evo X and I would high recommend installing one in your car then having it re-tuned.
