Lets keep it going guys! I want to find out if the people getting chain stretch are a minority or if it plaugues every car. Some of the guys in here with higher mileage are proving that maybe it doesn't happen to everyone.

18k and no issues

maybe it'd be a better idea to make a "I have had a timing chain issue at XXXXX miles"
I'm sure there are more people without the issue than with it...

2008 GSR with 57000 miles
M1EP filter and oil @3-5k intervals
Stock with Cobb AP 91 base map
No timing chain or cam/crank engine lights or codes.
Chain is not stretched and this is verifiable via visual inspection per the descriptions in the service manual.

My Evo is a daily driver that is no stranger to an occasional road course or autocross.

My questions for everyone are... What does the group mean when they say there's no "no timing chain issue"? Are you visually inspecting the chain? Do you only consider an issue when it manifests as engine warning light or engine failure? You can pm responses to me, but I think these questions are pertinent to the validity of the content in this thread.

Haha I was thinking the same thing... I was like this thread is going to get huge from everyone being like "my car runs, no issue." Not knocking it, I blew my motor and did a complete rebuild and kept the original (30k)

I edited my post to correctly state I do not have a chain issue as verified by visual inspection. I was in there measuring valve clearance too, and no adjustments are needed.

I've been to nearly a dozen track days, half as many autocrosses, and maybe a few quarter mile launches. I live in Iowa and do all my own maintenance, and I'll drive three hours east and have AMS take on any projects I can't handle. The only dealerships I'd trust to work on my car are in California.

I've read enough forum noise to speculate that many owners on these forums neglect maintenance and cluelessly bolt on and tune. It's unfortunate.

Owning an Evo comes with some responsibility. Hopefully, people who drive hard and maintain well will have good fortune with timing chains.

never had a issue with the timing chain. I'd like to think i run my car hard. I maintain it very well but i did 1 time attack race this year and the first time i brought the car to the drag strip this year, i blew the engine. Disipte maintaining the car very well, it still blew...sometimes **** just happends.

Could you please give the part number of the new chain?

No issues for me, around 70 kmiles. Personally I heard only about chain issues with SST equipped cars.

Right on. Mechanical devices eventually fail, and all I can do is make my own luck. I'm a student of cars and always learning. I don't think you can thoroughly experience these cars without incuring some risk of mechanical failure. There's some science and engineering and educated management of those risks. Even a properly built, tuned, cooled, and lubricated engine can fail due to wear or defect. eat more broccoli and change oil regularily; Make your own luck.

If I may ask, when did they change the timing chain and how is it supposed to be better then the previous design?

Thanks!
