To Catch can or not to catch can…???

So I've read numerous threads over numerous forums about catch cans, are they worth it, whats the point, how to install them, use breather filters on top or not, do you hook up to PCV and intake or PCV to intake mani or should you run two (one from each). I had the MAP Air/Oil seperator before and never really noticed anything in it and it was hooked up from the PCV to intake. One thread I read said thats more beneficial going from PCV to intake but the PCV on passenger side to intake manifold collects more oily air….can somebody break this down into lay mens terms…..

Unless you have some crazy setup don't bother; real-world I've seen them cause more problems than they solve. There is nothing wrong with the stock ventilation system.

What kind of problems do they cause? I've seen oily residue in my UICP, not sure if thats normal but I thought thats what a catch can was supposed to get rid of(?). Also, I do a bit of tracking (road course) and heard that cans were a good thing due to piston blow by...

There are a few ways to hook up catch cans and they do have good uses. One of them being that there is a HP gain from it.

Go ahead chime in all the nay sayers..

I've ran one in both spots and never accumulated any oil so I just run it stock.

If you're not tracking your car there's probably no need. Stock with all the bolt ons I opted for a catch can after discovering a small pool of oil on the intake side of the turbo when pulling things apart.

After installing the catch can, I'd get a small amount in the catch can. After the engine rebuild, I'm getting a whole lot more. I haven't measured it, but it's enough that I really don't want all that in my intercooler/turbo/etc.

Edit: This is with tracking the car. Street driving I had no buildup so far as I could tell.

Seriously? They saw a ~0.6% gain as measured on two separate dyno runs and confidently proclaimed, "Not only did the catch can make power; we could actually see how it worked." You could fart next to a motor and see a 0.6% gain on the next run. That must mean that flatulence makes power, as well. Ricer rags.

I have a catch can going from the PCV and the other side of the VC, the intake is plugged. (now gone with SD) I have a breather cap on it. I find a lot of water/oil in it and have to empty it twice a month. I'd rather have it in THERE then in my intake manifold... Just my .02

The PCV valve is garbage and leaks on most of these cars. When you get into boost it will allow air to pass through which pressurizes the crankcase. This usually causes the dipstick to pop out since the breather on the VC can't relieve enough pressure. It also makes for difficulty in the return of oil to the pan.

Best thing you can do is run a line from the PCV port to a catch can then put a quality check valve in-between the catch can and the manifold. Then, enjoy not having oil inside your manifold!

Is you can VTA? I'm making almost the same setup as you but I'm going to run a line back to the intake tube to help vacuum out pressure while in boost. I'm thinking about getting rid of the PCV though and just using putting a hose barb in its place.

Yeah I saw that but the mounting location is garbage, not trying to remove the bumper to check the catch can
