Got a taste, now hungry for more
Hello gentlemen,
I just returned from a fun trip to English Racing for my first set of modification and a tune. With an ETS intake, test pipe and V2 quiet exhaust, English squeezed 326/309 @ 24psi out of my engine. Although I love the improved performance, it's still a little less than I was expecting (was hoping for 340-350whp). Not sure why I fell short (seeing some other numbers around here), but here we are.
So... I'm thinking about the next steps. I'm planning to upgrade the intercooler and upper/lower pipes, most likely sticking with the ETS theme. So, assuming those are upgraded, I think a new turbo will be in order.
I think I'd like to go with a ball bearing turbo, given the improved performance/reliability of those designs. A new downpipe would be included with that upgrade, as well as any necessary supporting modification (injectors, fuel pump, etc.)
Now here comes my question. Although I may partake in some track or auto-x days, I'm mostly looking for good street performance for mountain road carving. So, spool up time is pretty important, though I'd like some higher HP numbers too. I wouldn't mind making it into the 400s or maybe even 450s. Reliability is of concern to me as well, I'd like to avoid blowing the motor.
Given these guidelines, what turbos should I be looking at? The BB FP Red is on my list thus far, but what else?
Thanks!

And it starts!!
I would say you are on the right track with the FP Red or even Maps Ef3. Both of those turbos will get you to your power goals. Keep a conservative tune and it should be fairly reliable. Like with everything, anytime you mod your going to lose some reliability. Driving habits, tune, and up keep will become extremely important. GL with your goals.

Aren't the MAP turbos journal bearings? I'm really hoping for ball bearing for all the upsides.

If you want to go with a stock frame BB turbo upgrade then the FP Red would be my only choice and could be the only choice. I haven't seen any other of the stock frame turbos that are BB. A complete kit on the other side, like AMS's 750R or ETS's, are awesome kits but your going sacrifice to much low end grunt and drivability excitement at the power levels your seeking. Don't shy away of JB turbos though, it may spool 300 rpm's later but they are still very good and reliable turbo's with a savings of around 500.00. With that much cash you could port your stock manifold and get a few more ponies there.
I think to me, $500 is worth it if the ball bearing benefits are considered. Faster spool up, longer sustained boost between shifts, and longer lifetime of the turbo, correct? Surely that's worth the extra expense... unless I'm misunderstanding the advantages
What about the ATP Garrett GTX series?
If FP Red is it, I may be in trouble as they supposedly are only making 5 of those... and that's it. Not sure I'll have the cash in time to buy one, so I may have to have them do an upgrade build.
So, for argument sake, if I did go with a journal bearing turbo, what kind of life can I expect in these cars? I realize that would open up my options, such as the BBX Full and the MAP EF series.
I'm open to all opinions, don't be shy

Well, that's the kind of endorsement I can understand
I'll give it a strong consideration. The BB FP turbos may not even be available by the time I'm ready to spend the money. I appreciate the recommendation!

Crap, I think you're right. *sighs*
Looks like I'll be getting new cams too.

That's not bad power increase from just intake, tp and cbe at all.
I put down 325/320 with the mods in my sig. All in all it's just numbers. I bet your top end pulls a lot harder than it used do

Don't get me wrong, the improvement is amazing and the car finally feels like I always imagined it should. But... I feel like I was robbed of 15hp ;-)
I think my next trip to English will consist of ETS intercooler and piping, as well as new cams. I think then I should see at least 340s. The big step after that is turbo.
I need to start selling plasma ;-)
