Saw a blown Motor

So I saw an evo motor that had a hole blown into it. Whats weird is that the oil filter section was peeled back. What would cause a catastrophic failure in that area of the motor. Hopefully someone has some clue to this so we all can benefit from the knowledge from having this happen to us

W/O any pics I am guessing that it was leakig oil (if the oil filter housing was peeled back) so the motor prob ran out of oil, so no oil means bad things

I was at this local non performance shop and the car was going for a test drive from a shop after getting breaks done and the manager told the guy the motor blew and they weren't going to fix it. so have no pics but I could see the hole when it got towed back up there. The guy said it had oil in it cause it was all over the engine bay and the ground

Could be a number of things. This is my buddies evo that i pulled apart...

Bracket is holding on the entire side of the block together. The block pretty much cracked in half.

He had a misfire, lost the top part of the spark plug, it got stock in the cylinder wall and the engine just chewed itself apart. He said when it blew he found the wrist pin to #3 on the highway.

oil filter probably got piece of the motor in it and clogged it up, causing a **** load of pressure.

There's a 70 page thread on the other forum dedicated to blown motors. Interesting but depressing read.

Ran into the guy with evo at the gas station yesterday. Well the place that had worked on this car refuses to fix his car. They are saying that he had to do something to the car for it to blow. The guy said its stock besides exhaust and intake and lowered. The manager of this place evn visited his house to found out what's going on with the car and wanted to know why he hadn't taken it to the dealer. The guy said he wanted to get a lawyer and the manger got defensive. It's crazy that a repair shop would be like this.

I have a feeling the dealer isn't going to fix it due to another shop going on a test drive and the motor blow. I think Mitsubishi is going to say its the other shops problem

We had similar damage at 680hp on stock block when the rod bolt stretched and let go. That was after 200+ dyno runs, countless awd launches and tons of track abuse.

Well got some info on that car. He has been in litigation against the shop. It was found that when Mitsubishi pull diag codes it had an engine overspeed code. It was revved to about 12 to 13k rpm. The adjusters were able to prove that it was taken for a joy rude instead of a test drive. They did take liability for what happened, but he is waiting on the payment or negotiation of how much they are liable for
