Which clutch for stock CMC?

Clutch finally went out on my X. Was chasing a hesitation for a while until she finally started to noticably slip. Im pushing 336/317 and looking at the Exedy St1 HD but Im worried about my CMC. Ive searched the web looking for a definitive answer and have yet to find one. I realize that the added resistance of the pressure plate will strain the factory unit yet Im already in the hole paying $1250 for the clutch/install/flywheel. Any suggestions on a good clutch for the factory unit or experience with the AMS ring?

In all honesty - cmc even go out sometimes with an oem clutch. I think it would be foolish to put another oem clutch in it especially if you are considering making more power at some point. I would get the clutch you're interested in - and just be aware that the cmc my go out, or be proactive and get the cmc kit. I have a magnus cmc kit and love it.

I have heard of a few failures with the cmc ring from ams, I went with the magnus kit bc is uses a mitsubishi factory master cyclinder from the 8/9 which has an aluminum body. The kit is a PITA to install but can be done in the garage in a few hours. Not hard, just tight spaces make it hard to work. Other than some hand tools all needed is a dremel with a variety of grinding/cutting wheels/grinders, etc.

your right stock clutch is an exedy
01CBR929 is correct sometimes they break on stock clutch sometimes they dont have a problem on HD clutch like my ACT 6 Puck which is still on a stock cmc
i guess it also depends on how you drive your car

I went with an ACT HDSS from MAP, along with a be OEM fly wheel, and it's holding up great for about 10k miles. Feels and takes like the stock also. That being said I've got a Magnus cmc kit siting on my work bench that I'll install one day before the stock I've blows. I know of 2 fellow EvoXs, one with the Exceddy, and the other Clutch Masters and both blew their cmcs within days. Both were using the stock fly wheel also.

I'm considering Exedy....thought about ACT but read about the lockout issues others were having. Currently I'm looking at the St 1 HD...that plus install on the cmc is running me $16-1700....not trying to pay that just for a freaking clutch. So you've said you've had good experience with ACT?

When mine goes I'm considering the Competition Stage 2 and just doing it myself over a weekend or two since I have another daily driver. I also am wondering how it will hold on the stock CMC.

Felt it slip for the first time yesterday when punching it in third coming into boost. My car has low mileage so I was thinking no way it's already going out, but it hasn't slipped again since. I probably just need to bleed the system. I removed the restrictor pill 4000 miles ago and perhaps a rebleed is needed.....

Lets hope...

I would replace the cmc and get a good performance clutch. That cmc isn't gonna last.

I've driven an Evo x with and ACT HDSS clutch before, it's not even remotely close to stock on feel, take up, or pedal pressure. My spec clutch is at least 2x heavier than stock, and the ACT clutch is still heavier than that (that's not to say its not fit for dd duties, just the stock clutch is feather light). And the ACT clutch doesn't have consistent pedal pressure throughout the stroke, it gets heavier and lighter throughout the pedal stroke

To the OP,
Unfortunately reviews like the above are way to common, people's take on clutches are way to subjective, and some go overboard to justify their purchase. the only way to know what clutch will work for you is to find one with a clutch you're interested in and ask them to drive their car

Yes I just wish I would have gone with slightly more aggressive and stronger one now as I can get this one to slip

You've, "driven" and i own one. Your experience is not what I'm experiencing at all. Other's with Evo 10s that have "driven" my car say it's like stock also.

and

this is part of the reason for my post, 99.99999999999999999% of all clutch reviews: "like stock" or "just barely heavier than stock"

it is not like stock, go test drive a stock evo at a mitsu dealer, not even remotely close to stock. when i test drove the ACT clutched evo, mine still had the stock one in it, so i had a direct comparison of stock vs ACT. its not even close

my original comment stands, go test drive other evo's with the clutch you may be interested in, do not trust anyone else's opinion
