15k miles and clutch?

Hello all,

I have seen many posts in regards to the stock clutch. I bought this car in May of 2012 and put 15k miles on it so far. This is my daily for another year or 2 upon which I will take it off the streets and start my real build for Mid ohio track days. Over the past month or so I have been smelling clutch on occasion after a quick1-2 gear pull or when I do a 5th gear pull on the highway. I do drive this car aggressively but I dont ride the clutch at all. leave at 1200 rpms or so. Would it be time for a new clutch soon? i dont feel it slipping??..

Im guessing i have a little over 300 whp right now. I have maybe launched it 5-6 times.

thanks guys

As long as it still grabs you're good. Just take it a bit easier if you want it to last longer.

I'd do some 4th gear pulls and see if it holds. Long as it's holding you're fine. Should be able to get 30k out of easy. I'd say the average life of a clutch is about 45-60k on a bolt-on tuned X.

Watch the weight of the car load. To much weight with two big guys in the car, 500lbs, some pulls and there goes the pressure plate. Evo on a stock clutch with bolt on's and a tune at about 350hp. Wasn't doing launches, just 3rd and 4th gear pulls. No burning clutch smell. The next day major slippage. New clutch time.

Yea, thanks guys..

its just frustrating. You shouldnt be able to smell clutch imo if your only doing a pull with bolt ons in the car. Would anyone recommend ACT for a new clutch? I want to finish my bolt ons and do a AMS 750 R with low torque tune for awhile until I can get it off the road to strengthen the motor. Any recommendations?

Competition clutch has really stepped up and has come out with a great lineup for the Evo. After much research I've selected competition clutch. Do a quick search and you will find some good review threads on the most recent revised lineup. Best price/performance ratio out there IMO. I like to research every purchase and if I concluded exedy I would have gone that route if that means anything to you. You will want the AMS clutch master cylinder upgrade kit.

You may need to revise my personal considerations depending on your power level.
5153-1620 PERFORMANCE CLUTCH KIT - SCC Stage 4 - 6 Pad Ceramic

5153-2600 PERFORMANCE CLUTCH KIT - SCC Stage 3 - Segmented Ceramic

yea,

I am looking for an upgrade that will last a while for me but also will be okay if i drive it to work and have some fun with it on the back roads a few times a week. Im trying to build a very reliable 450whp track car that isnt just quick but all around with braking, cornering, and acceleration all the while being fine for a local weekend trip. How much will the stage 4 or 3 competition clutch change the drivability in general?

I can let you know after tonight's drive home with some drive time on the new clutch. The best is for you to do some reading. It really varies from clutch to clutch and also people's personal preference. So you may want to read the impressions of many people to get a general idea of a certain clutch. Obviously a test drive in a car equipped with the clutch that you want would be best.

completely understandable.
I wish there were more evo X's around my area to compare. I guess I will have to pick one and go from there. I like the price point of the competition clutches but I also want that clutch to last.

1200 is for a twin disk not a single. Check out twins from other manufacturers and then revise your statement.

Clutch feels good. Obviously engagement is different, bites much faster. Much smaller friction zone before it bites. First is really the only gear that will take getting used to and relearning the engagment point. Shifts are smooth. Granted I'm breaking it in so all low rev shifts for a while. The clutch peddle is firmer, a bit heavier. Nothing drastic and unmanageable for a dd. I like a slightly firmer peddle in comparison to the mushy stock feel.
I am however going on the feel of a accompanying clutch master cylinder upgrade kit from AMS with a steel braided clutch line. I highly recommend the kit with any new clutch. While your getting the work done it would almost be silly not to do it in one shot. To many benefits not to do it.
To round off the whole upgrade experience, I installed a works short shifter kit which includes their bushings. I added the gate selector bushing from torque solutions.

I have just noticed slipping in 4th and 5th under a decent press of the throttle. I am curious about the comp clutch from map. It's a decent price but I've not heard the name much. I figure an aluminum fidanza flywheel while I'm in there. I too would like to have a few evos close by to compare clutch feels. Mine is a DD while the gsx is on stands. Not tracking it til I've enjoyed having a pretty car stay pretty for awhile.
