What is meant by an, "engine rebuild"?

I searched this but couldn't find anything. When somebody says "you should rebuild your engine if you go over 400 torque" what do they mean? Is it just rods and pistons or other parts as well?

And out of curiosity, what is the average cost in labor to do that? I know it differs from shop to shop. Just curious about a average. Thanks.

The stock crank is pretty strong so yes rods and pistons. Some ARP hardware couldn't hurt either. And for an average cost I have no clue.

Thanks that's what I figured. It just sounds like so much more when they say you need "an engine rebuild".

A lot more goes into it than just rods and pistons. You need to also factor in all the gaskets, bearings, etc.

For a basic "stage 1" rebuild, assuming you have a good block to use as a core, you're looking at nearly $4k by the time you're done adding the gaskets, hardware, and other options that are a good idea.

I am actually talking to MAPerformance now about this. Nate informed me that for the EVO X, they "don't really offer a core exchange for EVO X's because 9 times out of 10...those motors end up windowed or otherwise ruined when the break. That being said, we COULD supply a new OEM core, charge you for it and if your block is still good by the time we are done, offer you a fair trade in value for it. Essentially I wouldn't be able to make it happen for ZERO because we would have to supply a new OEM block, crank, ETC but I would be a fair buyer, depending on condition!"

I don't plan on blowing my stock motor before the build so hopefully it will workout for me!

They can't just rebuild the engine in my car?

4k isn't bad. My next mod is E85 and ETS IC in January. Then if I don't feel a difference or I get use to the power too quickly ill look at a rebuild with cams and larger turbo.

Thanks for the responses

technically you could rebuild it in the car if you were just doing drop in rods and pistons....BUT depending on mileage etc you should have the block machined to make sure the cylinder walls and deck are good to go. IMO if you are going to spend the money do it right the first time or you will be kicking yourself when it blows up due to something stupid later.
