Whine noise after CMC recall done...

Got my CMC recall done today and on the way home I noticed a new noise that I never heard before. Its an RPM dependent, low to high pitch whining noise. I can hear it slightly on the left side near the power steering pump. But can be heard in the car if I listen around the radio area. Went back to the dealer and they could not hear it. Here is what I know.

1.) It makes the same noise no matter what gear I am in. Even neutral with throttle.
2.) It makes the same noise with clutch depressed or not (at a standstill). While driving it goes away when I depress the clutch since the RPMs drop.
3.) It makes the same noise whether the car is moving or at standstill.
4.) It is RPM dependent and becomes a higher pitch at higher the RPM range, then the exhaust drowns it out.
5.) It is most prominent in 3rd gear around 3k RPMs and increases from there. It think this is just because the exhaust drones at most other RPMs.
6.) It only makes the noise when I throttle. It is either not noticable or non existent unless I throttle.

The car is a 2010 and only has 9300 miles on it (kind of a garage queen). All original fluids except for oil and coolant. Cobb Stage 2 OTS. Never raced, never tracked, never launched.

I also got the ECM update while I was there since I had the tune uninstalled, figured why not. Rev hang is awful after the update btw...

It was also raining today and was the first or second time I drove the car in the rain. So maybe water got to something.

My steering feels fine, but it makes a similar noise as the power steering pump... Dont think it can be the TC... can it? Maybe the Turbo.. but it makes the noise even when not in boost. I know they had to bleed the clutch line... maybe there was still air? Been researching all day and figured I would ask the crowd.

I will try to get a video but the exhaust drowns everything out Thanks in advance!

Sounds like a short to ground. I would take it back to the dealer they might of taken off a ground wire and not put it back on or not tight enough. had the same problem in a 93 BMW. Have you tried turning off the stereo? if it is a short to ground it should turn off if the stereo is completely off. Can you tell if it is coming from the speakers or engine?

Guaranteed they did not turn the radio on and drive it. any stereo shop can fix this. Needs a capacitor in line going to ground on teh stereo power wire. Have your dealer
check all the work they did. Be prepared to fight as they will make noises about voiding the warranty for you mods.

Thanks Guys. I think I may have narrowed it down to a post from another forum. Definitely does not seems to be coming from the speakers and does it whether the radio is on or off, unless its coming from the actual head unit itself (non Nav). Left side of the engine near the pulleys is where the sound seems to be. The car drives just fine. Its just odd that it did not start until after the recall was done

Not sure how the mods feel about posting to another forum (delete this link if not okay) but this thread pretty much sums it up:
http://www.evoxforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=47720

The noise is very similar to these but just a bit quieter to the vids below (not my vids).

Depending on where you live some shops will do a free diagnostics. I would do that then go back to the dealer and show them that another certified mechanic found a issue that occurred after you had work done by them. I couldn't really hear anything in the video but I don't know what your car usually sounds like with the exhaust etc. and its difficult to tell not being in person. Sorry couldn't be more of assistance good luck with finding the problem!

Thank you for the response The noise is the actual high pitched whine that you are directly hearing in the video. It would be rather quiet, otherwise. With my car, all you would hear is the exhaust take over real quick I have a local shop that works on my other cars and installed my exhaust on this one, so I may try to see if they can see anything obvious before I brink it to say, Ivey or someplace like that.

Yeah, thats what I'm figuring as well. I am going to look into it once I get the car out again. Would you say normal? Some people seem to be alluding to that. Or should I replace it? It is quieter than that in the vid but it is there. Its just odd that it started after the dealership did the CMC recall and reflash.

The oil in the car has less than 1000 miles on it and was replaced right before winter. I started the car regularly for about 10 mins or so 1 or 2 days a week and drove it around every few weeks during the winter.

In the less than 10,000 miles and 4 years that I've had the car, its had around 8 oil changes Was just getting ready to do another as well but everyone tells me not to bother.

First, drive the car more, dude! Put some km's on that thang.

Second; yes, unfourtunately its normal. Some people have had their oil pump replaced under warranty with mixed results.. for some the noise came back.

Mine does the same thing. WIth fresh oil there is no noise... within, say, 2000km the noise returns.

You could play around with different brands of oil, and different viscosities... see what works best for you. I'm gonna use up the Mobil 1 I have left and then try a different brand of oil.

My car made a LOT of noise on the oil that came in from factory. And when I drained it it looked... I donno man.. it was ****ed up looking lol.

Yeah Yeah, I know. After I bought the car I wound up moving to a city area and had no garage to park the car, so it stayed at my brothers place 25 miles away, so it became a once a week car and is always stored in the winter. Plus my 60 to 70 mile round trip commute does not work too well with the gas mileage. I now have a garage and plan on driving it a little more. I'm a bit **** I guess. Not like its a porsche

Thanks for chiming in. I've done a lot of research and I guess this is a "normal" type noise. Most people don't notice it since they have always had the noise so its normal to them. I plan on changing the oil and I will post up the results. I've always used M1 but may go for the "higher mileage" version or maybe a different weight since people seem to think I may get better results. Or may just switch all together. I am also going to start changing all of the other fluids as well just to see.

Just an update. I changed the oil with Mobile 1 5W30 (extended life this time around) with a M1-104 oil filter (as I normally do) and the noise is pretty much back down to normal levels. I normally use the extended life but last time I didn't. My last oil change was around last October but it only had around 1200 miles. It was a "tad" on the high side on the dipstick so maybe it was just the oil pump overworking a bit. In either case, all is well I still plan on getting all of the other fluids changed, regardless of what others say.

I have the same noise guys and took it to a dealer and they could not figure it out. I wonder if there is a tool that can help narrow down the area where the noise is coming from? This maybe normal noise for some Evos but the noise itself should not be normal. I use my Bluetooth in the car and the people on the other end hear sheep noises . Is there a way to break this mystery? Annoying as hell

AMS, Cobb, all tuners

Any ideas on the noise by any chance? This video sums it up best. Noise changes with RPM and it happens at idle and while in gear. Much appreciated!

Its the oil pump. Change the oil and the noise will go away but come back as the oil ages. I find I had best results, of all the oils I tried, with pennzoil platinum. Full synthetic, of course.
