Need you guys help to make it shift better
hey, all,
It is getting cooler recently and tbh, shifting this thing is getting annoying. So annoying that I am considering trading it right away once I see focus RS is released.
I thought it is probably because I am approaching 30k service. But I doubt it would help much. As it didnot help me much after last drive train fluid change.
Yesterday, I tried to shift my buddy's evo x when visited him. Holy ****, that thing goes to gears without any resistance. Like, it just slides into gears without any force.
What I observed:
When the car is off:
My car takes way more force to shift into gears. His car didnot even warm up and he can roll through gears freely. But when my car is off, not only it took more force, it would also sometimes be blocked half way and I had to roll to another gear to unblock it. For example, if 1st gear is blocked half way, I had to shift 3 to unblock it. If 4 is blocked half way, I have to shift it into 2 to unblock it. After doing all these crap for a few times, I can roll through all the gears freely, no problem. But it would be still blocked occasionally after that.
When the car is on:
I can clearly feel resistance when entering each gear moving or not. His car s shifter just slide in, mine is sorta like force it to go to slot, but it doesn't make sound or anything. Mine just took more force to shift the shifter into places. When shifting a lil slower, I can almost feel the shifter is interacting with the gears somehow, and it felt horrible especially 2nd gear. I had to shift faster to not experience that. When I tried to take off from stop, I would experience same problem like I did when car is off, some gears get blocked half way, I would usually pump the clutch a second time to unlock or unlock it like did when car is off.
I have been searching for transmission related stuff since I bought the car new (7miles on clock), on a daily basis.
The car acted like this since the beginning I think. I didnot think it was a problem cuz I just thought it took time to break in.
Took it to dealer and of course they said all the Evos are notchy.
I have all the internet solution you can think off. All the bushings , TWM full replacement, mt85 trans oil.
I have read all the possibly related thread and didnot find any solution. I have also brought my car to road race engineering. They said if it doesn't get worse or better, then it is just what it is. They suggested if it gets worse, bring it in. I guess it is just a tough problem to diagnose.
At this point, I am really not sure what to do. I really love the car and I like all the mods I have done and power it makes. But this problem is getting annoying. I am really missing my BWM 330i that I owned for a short amount of time.
Tried to bleed clutch line, no help either, maybe it felt tiny bit better.
What else should I try to replace at this point? After cmc? New clutch line? New clutch? The fact that it sometimes gets blocked halfway makes me think it is probably something internal. Would dirty trans oil affect shifting when car is off? Or should I just trade the car in once I find a car I like? Does this sound like too much problem to keep diagnosing it? Thanks for you guys help.

I don't know if it's the same as the 411B but on my CT9A the OP's problem is similar to my car when it had a warped "basket" plate of the twin clutch. It won't let my TO bearing to release properly and consistently. Therefore it randomly and often drag the clutch without me knowing. The Syncro took a beating. Get your clutch checked/replaced. Drain your trans and see if there are any metal. It's fixed after I replaced the outer plate of my purdy purple clutch.
Not being able to fully engage gears when the car is off is a common thing with manual transmissions. My car does the same. Doesn't mean there's anything wrong.
Did you enlarge the hole on the gate selector bushing enough to allow free movement? I had to bore mine out a good bit then lubricate it to get decent shifting characteristics. When the car is cold, shifting, especially into 1st gear, can be cumbersome also.
Other than that they are inherently notchy transmissions.

FYI i did some reading around and it seems that the mixture of tranny fluid you use can have a large impact as well. 2 quarts of redline MTL and 1 quart of redline MT90 seem to be the best for smoother shifting. Not sure how doing straight MT85 would be, i heard doing straight 3q MT90 makes it harder to shift than mixing 2q of MTL. That might be your problem right there.
