I get about 15 city and 23 HWY in my MDX, but on my R1, I get 36 city and 41 HWY. The EVO is not going to get you great mileage, if you were worried about that you would have spent the $38000 on a Prius. You can always get a bike like I did, you are much faster then MOST cars on the road, great gas consumption, I made 171.0 on a DynoJet and run a 10.31 in 1/4.

The gearing on the X seems lower than the IX/ 3100 RPM @ 65mph. Not good for mileage.

If you think gas mileage is bad now, just wait until you start modding it.

Modding doesnt necessarily mean bad gas mileage. Sure, in WOT it may get worse, but just cruising around, you can a lot of times improve the milage with good mods and tuning. Of course, this lends mostly to the tune then the mods, but I think tuning is a type of mod too

Yep. Modding ruining gas mileage is a huge misconception. Most tunes and mods will actually improve gas mileage (especially ECU tunes and open exhausts and intakes), but the reason everyone believes they make gas mileage worse is because you do the mods to get more excitement out of driving the car, which means higher revs and more WOT situations. If you drive like a grandma with your mods, you will see better gas mileage.

22mpg for a 2.0L is terrible. I get ~26 hwy mpg on my VIII. I'm sure either car could benefit from a taller cruise (5th) gear. Some reference points for HWY gas mileage:
- 2.0L 2003 Evo VIII gets 26 mpg (it gets about 4 mpg @ the track)
- 2.5L 2008 Forester XT gets 21 mpg
- 3.2L 2008 R32 gets about 23 mpg
- 4.2L 1997 A8 got 23 mpg
- 3.5L 1988 735i got 22 mpg
- 1.6L 1989 Geo Prizm got 31 mpg

2008 Acura RDX (2.3L turbo I-4): 16/22 - same as the Evo except heavier and larger frontal area. I don't think anyone expects great numbers from a performance car but at least matching cars like the 335i, G35, or CTS, which are all in the same price and horsepower range but much heavier, could be expected.

I think one of the previous posters is right: Mitsubishi needs to give up on the rally spec and put in a bigger, higher-compression 4cyl engine with lower boost. We'd see more power AND economy that way.
