X in snow/ice
X in snow/ice
I don't know if anyone else has been able to experience the X in the snow/ice yet...so I thought I would post my thoughts.
First of all, my first experience with AWD and ice was our Evo IX MR on the stock Advans (which had belts showing because of a factory alignment issue, but that's another story). It did pretty well last winter...I didn't lose traction much and I had no problem getting up hills that 4x4s were sliding around on.
So...I drove the X to work yesterday. It was a beautiful day so I figured it'd be fine. I got off work and a half inch had fallen and the roads were extremely slick, especially at intersections...
All I can say is WOW! It did wonderful. I really thought the IX did well...and I know everyone's saying this is a negative, but that linear power was way easier to handle on the ice. It felt like the car knew where it was supposed to go, and just went. I realized when I got home that I hadn't changed the ACD from Tarmac, either.
My only complaint was the lights. I felt like I couldn't see squat with all the snow blowing around. I guess I just need to get used to HIDs again.
So...sorry about the rant...I just thought someone might like to know.

I took my X out in the snow today. I was really shocked at how well the car did handle. Being at Ft Drum we get snow all the time and its nice to know that the evo x handles so well even on the stock tires.
+1 for the x
+1 for the x
I love my x, but it completely sucks in snow. No problem accelerating, but stopping in any kind of snow/ice is challenging, especially on declines. I would not herald snow traction as one of the many attributes of the x.
I'm from Canada also and the AWD in the X is one of the reasons I'm going for it. I just think that we have to wait for people to put decent winter tires on and tell us how it feels and not rely on "stock tire" impressions, as they are high performance "summer" tires. I will definitely get a good set of winters on it to maximize the performance year-round.
Interesting to see that even on stocks, it is still pretty good! It says a lot about the S-AWC.

Seriously, just engine brake and it does fine...NO car/truck/suv can stop on solid ice. Compared to front wheel drives and even our Hummer, the X does very, very well.

The Advans are complete garbage in the snow. I live in Michigan and put Dunlop Graspics on, which are actually SNOW tires. You're BSing us if you think you had as much grip as 4x4s.. I drove through a few snows and had enough sliding to figure out I would be curbing the car eventually, even driving very careful. So I invested in tires.
I've got Bridgestone Blizzaks and it goes through it all. So much fun drifitng around corners in total control on the snow. I've had the car up to 70mph in the snow acclerating from 20 and sliding a bit around but it just takes off. So much fun.

Stopping on ice is difficult for any vehicle, be it 4WD/AWD, FWD or RWD. As she said, four wheel drive does not mean four wheel stop.
then get all seasons or better yet, i Michelin Pilot Alpine, which i think are the best performance snow tires, you can drive them on tarmac and in snow, + they are very quiet as opposed to the stock summer performance tires
