Yes, but the point remains regardless of the mechanics of the gearbox, doesn't it? To re-iterate: he didn't like it because he knew he could change gears but the computer wouldn't let him.

Yes, but even if the point remains...it is invalid because we're talking about the Evo X's SST, which has been acclaimed as a great gear box that gives you great control on the upshifts and the computer does a great job of downshifting for you. Just wait for CharlesJ to release the article this week...they (and tons of other reviewers) seemed to be quite impressed with it!

this is incorrect. he was merely annoyed with the beeping. i'm not sure if it has automatic upshifts but i doubt it because it beeps when when you hit redline and it beeps if you try to downshift where the next lower gear would overrev the engine.

in other words tiff was merely making a point. if it were a manual, he'd be doing the equivalent of going from 6th gear straight to 1st. no beeps to protect the engine, just one loud bang

in the SST it also beeps if the next lower gear would overrev the engine or the next higher gear would stall the engine. it does NOT beep when you hit redline. MUCH sportier tranny. the BEST DCT so far IMHO.

Why is it when someone posts a review and how they feel 100 people jump on him? You guys are ****** for doing that, if he wants to drive the evo naked that is what HE LIKES and it's his money or his car so who cares? Just read it and move on no need to bash people and post crap about someone.

It was beeping because he was trying to change gears and it wouldn't let him, regardless of whether he was going to blow the box up or not. Agreed? Who defines what 'overrev'ing is? The point at which he could shift was governed not by him, but someone who programmed the computer on the car to allow gearshifts at certain RPM only. No such issues exist in a manual transmission.

Sorry, I can't make it any clearer than this.

Thanks for the review. I share your feeling regarding the manual as well. If my car was purely for track days, no doubt the SST would be better. But, I am trying to make my daily commute less mundane, so having to shift myself helps do just that (whether it's in an Evo or a Golf Tdi).

yes i get your point but it is an incredibly stupid one. why would anybody allow the engine to overrev? by overrev i mean the point at which the engine will blow the f*ck up. what does overrev mean to you?

yeah it's nice to have "full control", but at the expense of destroying the engine? yeah right... get real...

also you can change gears anytime you want in any part of the powerband UNLESS the next higher or lower gear will do damage to the engine or stall the car. if someone is stupid enough to WANT to do that then don't b*tch at the engineers who want to save everybody else the headache of destroying their own car... maybe you advocate giving the driver full control, even full control to f*ck it up...

You're assuming that 'overrev' means 'the point at which the engine will blow the f*ck up'. By that definition, if the limit for gear chaning was set to prevent that happening then of course, that's fine. However, who's to say that the limit on this (or any other similar 'paddle' shifting gearbox) is set at that level? What's the max rev's you can go to from 3rd to 2nd in a DSG box versus the manual version, for example? I'm happy to be proved wrong but I'd suggest they are different (blowing up engines aside). All I'm saying is that there is 'something' in the way (eg a computer) of you changing gears on these types of boxes versus a manual transmission.

Anyway, I didn't intend for this to be a debate about the technicalities of SST-style transmissions. My original post was in regard to my preference for one or the other and you happened to take it in a different direction.
