yea I would think they would fix most if not all the previous Evo problems with the new Engine and tranny setup. So far I'm liking the direction Mitsu's going with this. I was never really a big fan of the Iron block. Heard to many horror storys about them throwing a rod and whatnot. Granted they were modded but I would expect mor from an Iron block. Anyway. I would love to drive on of these cars. They are the most all around get what you pay for sedan. Sorry for the little off topicness. Anyway aren't you supposed to replace every fluid in the car after the brake in period and then your set untill maintence?

Why do you ask?
I just thought maybe it could be the angle we shift...I mean shifting at different angles could cause it to grind...I hope this makes sense. With my IX I would change my sitting position to try and find the right angle to shift smoothly...Siting with my back straight seemed to work. If I rolled my seat back and tried to shift it would be nothcy. I just thought since the seats in the X are so low it could cause us taller people to have this 1st-2nd, and 2nd-3rd gear problems.

I don't know Im just guessing here.

Hmm I just dont see how the angle at which you press the gear lever can have any affect on the smoothness of the shift. Maybe you should take your car into the dealer. I test drove 2 different evox's before buying mine and they all felt really smooth to me...almost Honda like. I also dont understand peoples post about the clutch being stiff. It feels like it should be on a car with half the torque.

Have you guys even driven an STi? Now those are short gears. The evo's gears are a god send when compared to the STi. The evo's feel long compared to the sti.

the trans i can live with but the short gearing is very bad.

I agree with you! I love this transmission, although it could def use a 6th gear. The funny thing is I let my father take my evo for a drive yesterday. He gets back and says, I like the car "but it shift so easily." I said back to him, "thats a bad thing?" He said, "well I guess not, it's just so effortless." And this is coming from the guy that complained about my STi transmission all time. He hated how the STi required so much finesse to shift from 1st to 2nd under hard driving. Haha some people are never happy, it either requires to much or to little effort.

yes it needs a 6th gear but also a taller final drive. about 1600 rpm at 80mph would be nice. the motor has enough torque that it does not need the short gearing.

^^ lol i am sure if they would have came up with 6 spd. These would have been the complaints:

Need to go back to 5spd more power

Short gear ratio would have done it

etc.... I agree with 6spd

So I'm gonna test drive a 3rd X tomorrow, specifically to test these tranny theories... my first 2 test drives, I was grinding gears and both were notchy as hell and I was fighting the clutch the whole time. I'll give it another shot tomorrow and speed shift it as other have suggested. I had an '05 STi and I loved absolutely everything about the tranny and clutch. Gears were a little short, but the 6th gear was a SO nice.

Does anyone know the rated top speed of the evo x? I had mine up to 120 and I was shocked because I was at about 6,000rpm's! I felt like it wouldn't even reach 140.

The grinding and notchy trannys that you guys are talking about sounds just like the issues with earlier 350Z's. It wasn't an issue with all cars, but most. Nissan is on version NINE of their crappy Z tranny right now. I'm sure Mitsu will improve the X's next year. The first MY of any car usually has some quirks.

I test drove a X last week that had only 4 miles on it.The tranny didnt feel notchy at all to me.I had to yank on the shifter a little harder than i thought i would have to,but i chalk that up to it being brand new and not broken in yet.I used BG11 in both my Evo,s and never had a problem with notchy shifting ever.If i had to guess about the X,s notchy shifter,i would blame it on the for **** stock clutch more than the trans.
