Evo X is an Engine of the Year Nominee!
I bet the GTR motor will win. While the LS9 is a beast, so were the Hemis of yesteryear. The motor of the year has to be technologically advanced and perform with the best of them. The fact that the 3.8l is underrated at 483 hp, and is in a car that reaches 60 mph in 3.3 seconds is simply astounding. That is Ferrari Enzo territory. The M3 has a beautiful motor and it sounds amazing, but it does lack in fuel economy and total output.
I think that with the upcomng emissions and fuel economy concerns, many future motors will use turbocharging as the means to meet the performace and economy goals of the public. In that scenario, the GTR motor is at the forefront of this type of technology, giving the driver decent fuel economy for a 4000+ pound car with AWD, nearly non existant turbo lag, and great HP and Torque characteristics.
The 4B11 is simply outclassed in this field.
I love the M3's motor, but if I had to have one, it would be the GTR motor all the way.

The BMW S65 should win this. The VR38DETT is second place IMO.
That Audi engine doesn't deserve to be on the list IMO.
The 4B11 is outclassed in this company, but would shine more brightly if the stock fueling was better.
Sophia's daddy wants an E90 M3.

Good points, but for a title like engine of the year, I'm not sure that price/displacement/cylinders should be the ultimate deciding factors. However, as far as power, and efficiency as well as what you've already stated its a strong case. I think its cool that its mentioned at all.
I have to go with the 4b11, I've never seen a car with such violent revs, esp a 2.0l turbo 4. The X is real close to all these cars if you look at price to performance ratios. The GTR just doesn't do it for me, it's nice FOR SURE though, I'm also not a fan of BMW nor do I have any emotional ties to the Vette. 4b11 would receive me vote.
true, the 4B11 could be up there since its proving people wrong over and over again..... it had quite a task of replacing a legendary engine (not the the VR38 didnt either...) and has done so with great flying colors and with the constraint of staying a 2 liter
