lets do some math:
It takes 3 hours to go 240miles at 80mph, and 4 hours at 60mph.
Lets take the evo, I average roughly 20mpg at 80mph. This means it takes me 12 gallons to go 240miles. If I were to average 5mpg better by going 60mph, then it would take me 9.6 gallons.
So, by going 80 instead of 60 it takes an extra 2.4gallons of gas.
2.4gallons times $4 per gallon is $9.60.
So the question really is: is an hour of your time worth $9.60?
And lastly I really don't think 60mph is 5mpg more efficient then 80mph. Personally I'd rather pay the $8 for an extra hour.

Is it really necessary to make 3 post telling people they're incorrect? Anyways, It's all relative. If I get work earlier, I get more work done, and more time. Means in the long run I'll most likely make more than that $100 I saved. Its just a matter of ones own situation. Stay out of boost as much as you can and that'll keep some bucks around. I know that when I first got mine broke in I was hammering down everywhere. Now that the novelty has worn off I've enoticed I get a lot more mileage out of a tank simply to a different method of driving. Give it a whirl. On the other hand, I too have noticed that driving at say, 65 makes 27ish MPGs whereas 75 makes a touch under 25. That holds true.

I guess for me its always been if I can save an average of 5 minutes per day driving, then thats HUGE. Thats 30 hours a year! Its like you get an extra day each year to yourself.
As to whether or not its worth it? I guess thats very individual based. If the saved money allows you to get more of life and more of what you want then thats the way you should drive. For me though, I love my free time and every last second I can get I worship.
Although, the funny thing is now I end up spending that free time driving anyway. I love my evo.

Nice post Scott, not only are you saving gas by going slower your also saving lives. I do go through the gears quick sometimes but then I reframe and look at the baby seat in the back, the EVO is super quick and you always have idiots out there who want to race. I'm not saying Sunday driver slow, but just remember do yourself and others a favor by doing the speed limit and saving some gas!

Thank you I made a imformative thread with factual backing and everyone wants to say how it is not true and worth their time. All that I was saying is if the speed limit is 65mph and you are running 75mph slow down and save some $, by all means if the speed limit is 75mph then go it.
Its no wonder we are getting charged $4 per gal and the oil companies are getting away with it. I am by no means a "green" person(driving a EVO no one really is), but I try to do a little. Take it for what is worth.

Yes it was neccasary because I was responding to three differant peoples post. And thanks for confirming all that I was trying to tell people, slow down to 65mph or less if the speed limit abides and save some money and gas.

Second, I don't get what any of this has to do with oil companies getting away with charging $4/gallon. Sh*t we should be paying more then that. And the little, I stress little, amount of gas you save by going slower is not gonna tip the supply/demand scale in the other direction and cause prices to go down.
And as mentioned, If I drive faster and use the time saved to bill more hours at work I actually make more money then driving slower and billing less time. So driving slower costs me time and money, so I doubt I'll be pursuaded to do that anytime soon.

I have a 80 mile per day commute if going to the office and my IX is a daily ride for me. Im in sales so I drive about 40k year miles in my car. the last 2.5 years in an EVO 8 or 9 85K. 42k on my IX. lately I have been playing around trying to figure out ways to get the most from a tank.
if I get 300-325 miles on a tank it is usually all highway. at 70mph I will use about 11 gallons. no boost at all. around 29mpg. not a lot of fun.
now understand I do have cosworth cams, 80mm exhaust, TTP tune.
at 80-85 crusing mph and the few ocasional balistic boosting 4 gears, I will get about 240 miles on 11.8 gallons average.
it does make a slight diff, but seriously, its not an economy car, although you can do it. I find that slowing down by coasting going up hill and not maintaining the cruise speed help quite a bit too. I learned that trick in my Jetta with a fuel computer. I would always try and top ith mpg average. I dont mean coming to a stop on a hill, but rolling at 75 or 80, you can slow down going up a hill scrubbing some speed and gently roll on the gas again once over.
I did notice a slight difference when i put in the EVC 6 HKS boost controller too. two boost settings can hep. also throttle position boost control too.
anyway I am enjoying where this is going.
