Get 5 more mpg in your X.
these are good to know info. Thanks OP!
Seriously, the evo x is 40k car, premium gas only sports car... If you really care about the price of gas and your mpg on your X, then.. You my friend bit off more than you can swallow. Should have bought that hybrid for less.

Thanks, I think I know what i bought. I have owned three EVO's since 2003. Take a look at my join date and posts Vs. yours.
The higher the speed you are at the higher your engine rpm is. Go drive around town in first gear and tell me what kind of gas mileage you get. Also the faster you are going the more drag and wind resistance your car makes and it takes alot more of your cars power to push through it. Do you think your car would get worse gas mileage if it weighed 5,000 pounds vs. 3000 pounds. Your theory is wrong because it is not based on any factual thing.
JmurphSTI;5590705]It's based on what my car says I'm averaging for mpg. I know how I drive and I know how to read. so those are the "fatual things." And your analogy is a gross exageration. Driving around town if first gear will have you at redline. We're talking maybe a 1000 rpm difference between driving at 60 vs 80, if that. All I'm saying is once I have the momentum going, I don't need to give the car as much gas to get up hills. It works for me.
lets do some math:
It takes 3 hours to go 240miles at 80mph, and 4 hours at 60mph.
Lets take the evo, I average roughly 20mpg at 80mph. This means it takes me 12 gallons to go 240miles. If I were to average 5mpg better by going 60mph, then it would take me 9.6 gallons.
So, by going 80 instead of 60 it takes an extra 2.4gallons of gas.
2.4gallons times $4 per gallon is $9.60.
So the question really is: is an hour of your time worth $9.60?
And lastly I really don't think 60mph is 5mpg more efficient then 80mph. Personally I'd rather pay the $8 for an extra hour.

On mythbusters they increased their MPG something crazy like 10 fold by tailgating a tractor trailer for less (almost zero?) wind resistance... they were apprehensive to give out the numbers because of what may go down on the highways!
If i get to work any slower i will kill myself. i am not slowing down( i do that sitting in traffic when getting near philly)

there is another post like this out there somewhere and after reading this one, its funny how one sees the same opinions on it; you have the people who appreciate the discussion and you have the jack-tools who say, "if you wanted a fuel-efficient car, then you should have bought a prius."
i say, "why not have the best of both worlds?" and guess what? YOU CAN.
i use this car mostly as a commuter, wich occasional WOT to pass somebody and i might do a few auto-x events here and there.
but if i was going to save say 200-300USD in one year by getting better gas mileage, why not; but then again most young people but not limited to (flame suit on) dont think long term, so they cant see that by adding a few hundred USD here and there ( like not eating out and going drinking every weekend) will add up to thousands over course of the year, but what am i saying here, its your $ afterall, pee it away if you want to.
back on topic, i currently have a 9 and with mostly highway driving, i got 26mpg just recntly out of a tank, and thats with occasional lead foot use and i know i could get even more by doing any or all of the following, mostly #1 and of course not #5
(some of which have been discussed here)
1. slow down
2. tailgate someone to reduce drag (not advised)
3. tweak afr in cruising range to about 15.2-15.6 (with use of reflash)
4. put your car in neutral if you are cruising down the hill or if you have enought speed to get to that red light down the street (thats huge as well)
5. buy prius ( for the jack-tools)
anywho, thats my 25c, do with it what you want
PEACE

I know that most people already know about this and it is common physics having to do with drag, aerodynamics, weight....friction and what not. But this is just a simple reminder to everyone because even i forgot about it and this article reminded me. Slow down save gas.

I drive 30 miles to work at about 75-80 mph on open hwy with no red lights or traffic and gentle hills. The speed limit is 65 mph. At 75-80mph I get 20-21mpg. After reducing my speed to 65pmh today I got 26mpg and my HUD. That is a huge difference and more than worth slowing down in this time of $4 gallon gas and hard economic times. Thanks for reading. Hope this is ok in the EVO X section because I have seen lots of whats your MPG threads.

ok i guess you have a special car that is more effeciant at higher speed than any other car.
Maybe if you drive down hill everywhere you go.

Plus that 4th hour sitting in the car you'll be stressed out because you're used to making the trip in 3 hours and you'll be like "wtf i could be there already".
i have a 3 hour drive from base to my parents house i drive every weekend i have tested driving at different speeds and if i go between 85-90 mph i get a lot better gas mileage if i average around 70-75 i get 250-260 miles a tank going 80-85 its 300 and that includes hills some big some small and boosting etc. at higher speed it feels like the car has an easier time maintaining speed i dont have to boost at all its in vacuum at 70ish its right at about 0-1 psi

i dont know about my beater but i would never ever tailgate any car for better mpg, no less a tractor trailor. the quarters and dimes you save per mile tailgating, you are significantly increasing your chance of an accident AND chance of a rock being kicked up right into your bumper/hood. now even if the above event happens just ONCE, doesnt it negate your savings and MORE? please dont bother with tailgating to save gas..... just do it to get old people and wussies off the passing lane hehe
