Found the key

a friend was playing with my evo's fob and i was surprised to see he was inserting what looked like a key so i was like WTF, it turns out its the key the manual was saying all along. it is inserted at the back of the key fob. there is a tiny "lock" on the back the keeps it in place. once switched you can pull the key.

there was a thread that i posted that i read in the manual that our cars supposedly came with a key and the responses i got was we dont get a key if we have the fast key so this is not true cuz they key is in the fob.

i hope this is of help.

so dont cover up those key holes!

well i kept reading the manual and never said anything about behind the key fob so dummy me. oh well i am sure a few will find this useful. if this is the case then i wonder why others were ok to put a cover on their key hole.

its for safety too, on my m3 i replaced the whole keyhole with a blank cover. i figure if anything happens in my m3 i can open the trunk and climb in thru there

Your salesman never mentioned this to you when you went and bought the car? lol that was like one of the first things he showed to me when I went looking for my GTS. It wasn't a selling point but the fast key is pretty "fancy" lol

Yeah when I got my GTS that's the first thing I was told..."Hey check this out, the key comes out!"

I was impressed.

The fact that there is a key inside the fob is stated on at least 1 page in the manual. I guess the manual is pretty big though. In fact, the dealer told me there was a key in there on my test drive.... Yes, that's right, the dealer!

HAHA, dealer told me too.

Although the thing that gets me about that key is that it isn't very "safe" in the sense that anyone can get a copy of that key made and be able to drive your X. Its not like the non fast key key's where they have a chip that has to be programmed with the car in order to turn the car on.

So in reality, the fast key makes your car easier to steal...

You can start the car with the key, but I still think you must have the fob as well because that's where the chip is.

The car wont start with just the key and no FOB. And if it did, where would i put the key anyway? There is a big plastic knob in the key hole that cant be removed...can it?

if the fob is dead, as in battery, the car wont start w/ the key..put a back up battery in the glove (its the same as garage door openers too....) as a back up.
