putting the salesmen in charge of the proper care of a new evo is
like letting the fox guard the chickens. salesmen want sales, and they want the prospective buyer of a hot car to be impressed by the car's hotness. they could care less about the engine break-in. I've seem many a salesman rev the **** out of cold engines just moving them around the lot.

Agreed, salesman are idiots. And they hang their "Certified" certificates around their "offices" so proudly.

look at it this way, less moneys for them, you're not there to leisure them and give in to their demands. Let that overprice yatch sit at the lot, prolly can get a better deal at southcoast anyways.

I see that you live kind of close to where I live maybe like 35 mins. There is a dealership up here in Poughkeepsie that has some evo x and they should let you test drive them. Here is the web site no real pics of the cars of course.

I test drove my EVO VIII and that is what sold me on the car! I was not planning on buying the car that day, but came back to the same dealership and bought a different one with almost no miles.

No test drive when I bought the EVO IX, I new I wanted it and knew it was slower than my VIII

I was on TAD (business trip) orders in CA and decided to stop in and look at the new EVO X because the don't sell them in GUAM. I had no intentions on buying one, because I live in GUAM and it just would be to hard to ship one over in the short time I was there. They asked if I wanted to drive it! They ran my credit and off we went. Well... I picked it up that night and shipped here.

So I think test drives are a must!! Just let them run your credit to show them your intrested.

You are crazy if you let some dealership run your credit just to test drive a car.

Proof of license and insurance should be the MOST a dealer asks for you to test drive a car. If you think I'll be giving my SSN to some schmuck salesmen at a dealership you've got to be out of your freaking mind.

There is a balance between letting every 16 year old with a license "Test Drive" these types of cars and not letting anyone short of buying it climb into one. There isn't really a such thing as a test drive until you hit 500 miles anyways, since you can't really rev past 5000 RPM without feeling guilty that you just beat on the car before it was broken in. Even on the handling side, the tires will feel all swishy until they heat cycle or at least wear down the top layer of ruber anyways.

Returning Customers (especially if they have an Evo 8/9) would make sense as a requirement for a short test drive, someone that understands this isn't a joy ride.

If you are some Joe off the street I would hope they make you do a credit check and sign a waiver that states breaking it means you fix/buy it (aside from something not your fault). I was very appreciative that my car only had 6 miles on the odometer and not every dealership can afford to have a Evo X solely for test purposes that is between 500-2000 miles on the clock. Now with the Lancer Raliart coming out they may want to make one of those more available.

If you can't afford the car, you should not test drive it. One way is by checking your credit score, very common when you buy a new car.

I've never had a salesman run a credit score when buying a car nor would I ever let one do it. That's none of their business.

If your credit score is checked multiple times it will work against you. It can actually bring your credit score down if checked by multiple dealers in a short period of time. It wont have a dramatic effect but never the less not good.
I work in the lending industry and have the ability to run credit reports on clients so I'm speaking from personal experience.

I don't blame them for not letting you test drive. We dont test drive our S2000's without the buyer showing a little more comitment. Otherwise everyone would want to drive them. Not everyone can afford a $35,000 car. Not saying you can't... Imagine if the customer wrecked it and the dealership found out the customer couldn't even afford it due to income/credit. Or maybe the customer is not even insured... The salesman needs to watch out for himself because his job could be put into jeopardy. There is a tactful way of getting information from a customer though and qualifying them for the sale without making them feel turned off. Obviously this salesman did not due a very good job, otherwise you probably would have left with a new X!

Absolutely incorrect. You can have a credit score of 800. So what ? That just shows you are credit worthy, it doesn't say "oh this guy can afford a XXX payment!". Letting a dealer run your credit for a test drive is plain just a bad idea.

It depends on the dealer... Most people who buy cars don't want a car with any miles on it.

Most dealers do not have many Evo Xs around so they don't want to test drive the few that they have otherwise people won't want to buy them. For the ones that have a quite a few - they will usually have 1 tester to drive.
