Why do our evos smoke so much

i know evos smoke. it's like a factory option or something .

yesterday i ripped into it harder than i ever have and noticed white smoke from behind me. why is this? is it because we run so rich?

also doesn't the different color smoke indicate something (i.e., black/white/grey)?

another thing. I realize that the stock exhaust is practically made out of melted down metalic turds but who still has the stock exhaust and noticed the burnt up muffler?

i know there are a few questions. i'd appreciate hearing your observations and experiences.

The second factory re-flash and a drop in air filter will alleviate that condition a fair amount if you aren't ready for a custom tune yet.

White smoke--likely a head gasket, Blue smoke, oil--rings, valve seals etc..and Blk smoke is rich... An no--if you have smoke it is because you have other problems not the cars fault from the factory. Sounds like you have other issues.

i only caught it after it blew around. i will have to ask my buddy what color it actually was.

the car's got 5k miles on it. stock and never beaten and boost and responds as expected. i will have to double check it has only happened then too.

what about the burn marks on the muffler?

white smoke is BAD! (same with blue tinted smoke)

but the "burn" marks is actualy unburnt fuel mixed with exhaust, it leaves a black residue that you'll find wipes right off.

so the "burn marks" indicate a rich AFR, wich is good, rich is safe

the "burn marks" are purple and blue like aftermarket exhaust tips. i will try to wash it off when i wash the car but it doesn't appear to be old burnt carbon on the body of the muffler.

i don't understand how something could be wrong. i've only redlined it once and that was last night when this occurred. hasn't happened yet and all fluids look good.

your info isn't falling on deaf ears and i will have it checked out. i am a little perturbed by the fact that the one time that i redline my evo i have white misty smoke from the exhaust.

hmm purple blue could be metal discoloration from heat, when you run rich you'll shoot fire out the tail pipe from time to time (at least with out cats this is pretty common) so that could be it, though I dont think it gets hot enough to discolor metal, maybe they used some really cheap lowgrade metal or something  .

back the car up to a wall (that you dont care about) and rev it up to 6k or so a couple times, just some quick stabs, now pull away and check the wall, if there's black splatters where the exhaust pipes were your rich!

if its a stock X its most likely stupid rich, people are saying it gets as low as 8.8:1

i saw a lot of white smoke behind my evo once and i was freaking out, but then i started driving off and it was from the car behind me lol, it kinna look like he was burning his clutch though, because as soon as he drove off it start fading off. o.o

I say you need to get on the throttle more often then! Could be moisture built up in the exhaust being flushed out too. A tune will clean it up the most from what I've read and a good intake setup will also help lean out the ratios a bit from the stupid rich factory tune.
