Just for the record with all the bickering - the GSR and the MR have different grille inserts. The MR's center/bumper portion is most definitely painted - it is a charcoal gray color, slightly lighter than a GG X.
As for the GSR - I've always thought that it was unpainted black plastic, but I haven't studied one well enough to know - I'll revert judgement to a GSR owner for the final say.

How did you get the emblem off? Is it just taped on? Are there any pins or clips behind it?
not sure what you mean by areas where it was compressed...but I just used a heat gun and some fishing wire. It's held on by some 3M double sided tape. There aren't any holes behind it, but it does cover up an indentation that is molded into the plastic behind one of the diamonds. Be careful tho, because the emblem can easily be warped out of shape and not mold back into it's original space as well.

The chrome is also some sort of foil like covering over the plastic emblem. Mine separated causing an air pocket on one of the diamonds. I had to peel it off before applying primer and paint. The good thing is you can't tell after I has been painted.
