How did you do this? I mean... how did your "friend" do this? J/K So how did it happen exactly? Was it a downshift to the wrong gear or when the RPMs were too high? That's the only thing that I can think of that would really cause that since the rev limiter on accel won't allow you to go past the 7600 rpm fuel cut. Depending on how quickly it was caught it could be little to no damage or it could be catastrophic. If the car was downshifted into too low of a gear and the revs jumped to 8k but the clutch was immediately depressed and it was caught early then most likely nothing happened. If it lingered there for a couple of seconds like you said then I don't know.

I think it's probably fine seeing as how some people have raised there rev limits with ecutek to as high as 8200 rpms because the X seems to love to rev because of the bore X stroke ratio and so far I haven't heard of anyone having any issues so far. I am suspicious of that though, because that's a pretty big increase on stock cams and especially for these wimpy valve springs that the X seems to have. Time will tell I suppose. If his car drives fine then I wouldn't worry too much. If it's making ticking noises or other wierd noises that seem out of the ordinary then I would go to the dealership and say nothing about the cause just say you hear wierd noises and suspect the valves.

The only real way to defeat the rev limiter is to over-rev it under back-shifting. If you over-reved it, that's how it was done. There's ways to defeat the rev limiter, but you'd know if you did it. Usually a bent valve is the result of over-reving a motor. A lightly bent valve may just cause a rough idle. A really bent valve will drop the cylinder. If you're sure it was done under acceleration, you didn't rev it to 8k. You still could damage your motor by reving it to redline in neutral, as it should be under a load when reved that high. If you want to make sure, have a leak-down done on it.

I already told your "friend" that there shouldn't be anything to worry about . Like others have said this engine likes to rev and it should be fine if you don't stay in the red for long periods of time.
