Why does the snowflake stay on all the time?

On my HVAC controls, the snowflake is always on (i keep the blower and air selects on auto and only use the temp control). The snowflake (i presume AC) is always on UNLESS i put the temp to the max. I can turn it off manually but it annoys me that it wont turn off the AC to save fuel and, more importantly, but a couple of HP back to the wheels.

Any ideas?

Do you have the far right knob set on defrost for the front? And yes snowflake = AC.

Thats probably why. Sometimes when everything is on auto the AC turns on.

ive tried to set it to feet only and such, but the snowflake remains on unless i go to max temp, even one lower than max temp turns the snowflake on, but the air coming out is hot.

It is a common feature in most cars to have the AC on even in winter. This is because the AC dries out the air which will prevent the windows from fogging up. Leave the AC on unless your spirited driving and you will have very few problems with fogged up windows.

Look in the manual. I believe, but I'm pretty certain, that there is a way to set it to not automatically turn on/off the AC. it is listed in there. I'm not 100% certain but like 99% certain that there is a way to disable this feature and it is in the instruction manual.

You're absolutely correct. Read the manual and it will explain how to change it.

if the system was smart enough, I would love to leave everything on auto and let the system figure out at what speed and out of what vents to send the air.

the temperature knob where do you have it set to? i noticed that if you have it all the way to the left, lowest setting it turns the ac on, but one click up and the ac turns off.

I don't know why nobody has mentioned this... Even if everything is set to auto, if the temp is et all the way to 65 (or whatever the coldest setting is), then the AC automatically comes on when the air is cut on. Move the temp dial one notch warmer and when you cut it on, AC will not default to on. The system just intuitively thinks that if you set the temp all the way to cold, that you must be hot and it cus the AC on for you. Unless you are having a different issue, this should solve your problem. Let me know...

EDIT: Looks like someone above me posted the same answer at the same time.

your cars are already set then the way that i mentioned above. the default setting should have the ac on most of the time. This is for the reason I mentioned above (AC dries out the air which prevent fogging). last night it was 33 degrees and the car was parked outside for several hours. I have everything on automatic with the temperature set to ~73. I turn on the car and the AC is on.

He wants his car to function the way you mention. However, that is not the default and should not be the default.
