Ringing noise above 5k rpm in second gear?

Hey all, to add to my interior noise issues...does anyone with a stock X notice a ringing noise above 5k rpm's in second gear? It does it briefly in first as well, but second is most noticeable (from 5-7k rpm's at WOT). It doesn't seem to do it in third.

The sound seems to either be coming from the dash area or the engine bay. Not sure if this is normal. Can anyone else confirm? BTW, I noticed this with the radio off and windows up. It's quite noticeable when there isn't other background noise in the car.

How can you hear anything at all above 5k RPMs?

Well the noise is actually quite loud. It's a noticeable high pitched ringing noise. Funny thing is I had an old eclipse that made a very similar noise. It is a distinct noise from the engine noise, and I'm just worried something is broken.

sounds like an incorrectly grounded speaker.

It's probably just a vibration in the dash and you only hear it in the early gears because road noise and wind drownds it out as you get going faster. I have lots of rattles in my dash; there's one near the instrument clutster/ steering column, one somewhere in the radio dash unit, one in the glovebox, and the shifter cage rattles in 5th at speeds above 70 mph unless I press it lightly to the left for a second. Once I let go, the noise will go away but only for a minute. It's irritating, but it's an EVO, what did you expect?

^agreed. Had similar problem on my first car and it was the ground on the speaker. Took me months to finally figure out what it was.

Hey, I think I have the same noise, but mine is noticeable at 3200 rpm to 3600rpm on every gear. Especially at 5th coz at 3200 rpm I am crusing around 70mph.

It sounds like wheel/tire noise at the beginning, But I tested it by stay at 70mph and shift to neutral and as soon as I put it into neutral (still at 70mph) sound is gone. and engine runs super quiet(of coz haha).

So I did guess, its either gearbox, trans, or engine itself.

I am going back to dealership next Tuesday for an oil change or something and see if they can give me some type of answer.

I just wanna make sure its NORMAL. before I put any mods on it... coz I believe after TBE nothing could be heard anymore haha

Update: I did more testing of this. The ringing noise even happens at a complete stop. If the car is stopped in second gear with the clutch in, I can hear a ringing noise if I rev above 5k rpm's. If I put it in neutral and rev to above 5k, there's no ringing noise. Does this mean it's some sort of noise associated with the transmission since it only happens in gear? Should I be worried? The noise seems to be only in first and second gear, not third or higher.

I have the same problem, but in all gears(except for maybe 5th). It sounds like its coming from the tranny.

It's feedback coming through your speakers from the engine. Not an engine problem. It happens sometimes to all different cars. Not sure exactly what causes it though. I've heard it on my car, usually more noticable when using the aux jacks with an ipod but im not worried about it.

Sorry I didn't go dealership yet.

But as for today, I did a little testing.

the noise comes right up on 3200rpm. to 3600rpm. it gets louder when you drop your rpm into the "noise range" rpm.

it is for sure coming from tranny or driveshaft. Like I said before, if I put it in neutral there isnt any noise at all.

happens only when driving on the road. I will post up a video later. And yes I am going to dealership on coming Tuesday.

Thanks for the suggestion, but like EvoEgg, my car only does it while in gear. Never in neutral. So I don't think it's coming from the speakers. It also doesn't sound like it's coming from the speakers. I can replicate it while stopped with the car in gear and clutch in. Take the car out of gear and no more noise. So definitely transmission related imo.

Gotcha. Just to clarify, if you are in neutral and you rev the engine up do you hear it?
