Still doing it! I am at wits end!

It was a nice day today around 70 degrees out today and sunny, got my oil changed early because I am currently concerned about the oil dilution problem from the car running too rich. So with a nice day out and fresh oil change I decided to lay into the throttle some which I have not done in a long time. I take second gear up to high RPMs and it hits the dreaded stutter and hard! Thought something broke and then realized what it was. Also my car sometimes floods its self out on starting and it takes about another three starts to get her going and I have had both reflashes!

I know this has been discussed but I dont know what to do. Mitsu will not do anything about this. I know if I take the car in they will just tell me that I already have both flashes. I also know a "aftermarket" flash will take care of it, but that is not the point. I have no trust in this car and no I am afraid that because the car is running so rich that i am having fuel dilution problems and more than likley pre-mature engine wear. I am at 14k miles and the damage would all ready be done. I want out of this car. Again I ask what should i do? Thanks

why don't you take it to a evo shop around where you live and ask them to take a look at it.

On the bright side at least your weather is good, it was 17 degrees today for me.

I never thought I would get to this point with one of my EVO's. This is my third one and I have owned them since they were brought to the US in 2003. It boggles my freakin mind that they can engineer such a awesome AWD system but yet they can not get the tune right.

And yes they weather kicked butt today. We sold 3 motorcylces and 1 waverunner today because of it.

Mine will shut off occasionally if I try to start it up after being shut down for just a short time. It really pisses me off. I didn't know it was due to the engine flooding with fuel. I have both reflashes too. Other than this issue and the notchy tranny, it's a great car. I've learned to deal with the sporadic shutdowns.

I agree with you. Such a well-engineered platform except the tune. I think Mitsubishi was just trying to play it safe by making it extra rich to prevent detonation and/or knocking at high RPMs. Oh well.

You want out? Then get out. Go trade it in on something you'll like; it's obviously not the car for you and it's always going to be tainted in your eyes. No point trying to fight the stealership because they will do as little as they possibly can. Cut your losses if you don't want to go custom tune. Incidentally, I've owned one since 2003 and have owned 3 also and this will be my last Evo.

I know. But I want to get it tuned on my own terms not because i have to do it to get my car to run right. Also I am afraid now that because the car has been running so rich that it has been washing the cylinder walls and getting past the rings and diluting my oil and prematurly wearing my engine. My oil at 3800 miles today looked like and felt like crap. No way would I change it at 5k miles like the owner manuel says.

The fuel pickup on the car is also horrible. Under a half tank and the car can run lean. Be sure to keep your fuel level up.

I feel your pain. If I could get out of the car without too much financial pain then I would do so also. It's just not worth that 'extra' performance for someone like me who has tracked their car once in the 10 months of ownership. I want my '05 back .

Yup, on the track it starves even at 2/3 tank.

What is interesting is today we were dynotuning for a few hours and with a few bars left on the gauge the AFR was going from 11.4 to 12.7afr. I put back the car to stock and instead of 10.3afr, it was peaking at 11.00.

After brainstorming a bit and verifying all fuel pressure and vacuum lines were attached, performing a boost leak test, I decided to add 5 gal of fuel.

First pull was richer, next pull was back into the 10's again.

It's worked fine since. This is a serious flaw that we can lose engines over.

Try installing a drop-in filter. Between that and the second flash I have no hesitation.
