AMS Harness Bar Install

I installed the AMS Harness Bar over the weekend and what a great piece of equipment. It took me about 3 hours which included my time of trimming the B pillar covers for the upper bar mounts. I wanted a very clean hole which curved around the mount. I used a drexel to do the cutting.

The actual bar install took about 1 hour and the bar fit like a glove. It uses a stock thread on the B pillar for the upper mounts and new brackets for the lower mounting points off the stock seat rails. The bar is stout and has adjustability for the stock seats and aftermarket race seats. I'm 6' with long legs and the stock seat just rests on the harness bar. I like my seat further back than most so I don't see a clearance problem for anyone using the bar. Another nice design of this bar is still having full access to the rear seats. Again, I'm a taller guy and I have no problem getting in the rear or being comfortable once there.

I can't say more about the fit and finish of the bar, the welds, hardware and paint. The best part is the aluminum AMS logo in the center !

I'm building a NASA TT car and wanted 5 pt harnesses with 1 piece race seats. I wasn't sure about using the race seats for the street and wanted the ability to switch them out for the stock seat belts and stock seats. I thought long and hard about how to attach the harnesses while keeping the stock belts (and rear seats) in place and usable. This harness bar does just that and I couldn't be happier.

I'll go off the record and say the chassis feels stiffer to me. This bar and its mouting points are really solid so its got to help, although it would be hard to measure. It does built your confidence though.

Any wanting more pics of the install can email me.

The website isn't letting me attach other pics. Email me and I'll send them to you. clay@ljde.com

How hard is the entire bar to take in and out or just the cross bar?

Well I have a kid that rides in the back and I need to use the back seats during the week so I can't leave the harness bar in. If it's a 30 minute process to take in and out... then I dunno, but shorter and that's not too bad.

For the images, get a photobucket account and upload them there and then link them in. That way everyone can see them.

Thanks for the info!

I hope you're also going to install a cage when you decide to use a racing harness.

Yeah, lol I rolled my eyes at that one too. What does a cage even have to do with racing harnesses?

Absolutely nothing, unless the harness mounting points are on the cage.

well he's bringing up the fact/theory that without a cage, if you're in a rollover accident and are harnessed in your head is going to get crushed.

What's he's omitting is that this car likely isn't used as only a track car and a caged car on the street, without a helmet is VERY dangerous (and you're more likely to get into an accident on the street than at the track).

It's an old argument that people ALWAYS bring up whenever someone says "I want a harness bar" or "I want a 4 point harness."

The importance of the cage is just in case you rollover. The harnesses hold you in place and you can break your neck if the roof caves in without a rollcage. You dont have movement like you do with a regular seatbelt. How much confidence do you have in your seats?

re: the seats -- I have more confidence in the X seats than the VIII or IX seats, but that's not very hard to accomplish given how poorly the VIII and IX seats take to being in a wreck.

You can put the foam pipe padding on the cage which I think is a better route to go than to have a harness without a cage. The OP also stated he is building a NASA TT car which means that it will be driven very hard and the chance of a rollover is greater.
