Hood latch recall
I got my letter a few days ago. I don't anticipate there being a ton of Xs at the dealer getting this fixed. There simply aren't enough Evo Xs around here for that to happen. I just don't feel like dealing with the dealership, not to mention I just don't have the time and my latch works perfectly fine. Since it is safety related I will go ahead and make an appointment tomorrow.{sigh}
i got one as well.. "customer service campaign". i want to get this done since mine is hard to pull.
i krinch at the thought of bringing it anywhere here in nyc.
was wondering if anyone had this done in the ny area and can recommend a dealer..i had a hell of a time just getting the car reflashed here that i wound up getting it done in WV. i happen to be going down again in a couple weeks. i might just wait till then..

Got my letter the other day. It's not really a safety issue it's just a crappy part. If the cable freezes you can't open your hood, doesn't mean the latch is broken and will suddenly make your hood fly open at speed. not too worried about it yet mostly cuz i don't have time to take it in.

Just got my recall letter this Friday. Mines working fine right now as well, especially since I put some grease in at the opening to keep the water out.
It's a service campaign. A service campaign is positioned as a 'customer satisfaction' service to correct an issue which may contribute to other problems. In this case perhaps a customer could not service the car properly due to the fact that they could not open the hood or worse yet maybe an engine fire could not be extinguished quickly and the malfuctioning hood cable was found to be a contributing factor.
A recall is where a defect that has been directly related to a major saftey or emissions issue, usally by way of litigation that has been identified and new parts and or procedures (routing of wiring, etc) has been developed to corrrect it. Recalls are mandated by a regulatory body (NHTSA, EPA, etc). An example of a recent large scale recall would be fords brake pressure switch recall (fire problem for those that don't know)
A TSB (technical service bullietin) is more or less an internal memo that advises the technican on a particluar fix for a particular problem and may or may not include recommendations for updated parts, etc. It does not obligate the manufacturer to contact the customer proactively and unlike a recall or a service campagin the technician cannot be paid for doing it unless the complaint referenced by the TSB is on the repair order.
Hope that clears it up.

FYI, check out this thread for instructions on how to replace it yourself and a link to buy the part (costs $11). It does not look that easy to do, but i dread going to the dealership enough that i may attempt it...

otherwise i see my car coming back to me with less clips, bolts than when i brought it in..
thanks again
Got my oil changed yesterday (dealer does it for free) and they mentioned they were required to do the replacement of the hood latch cable specifically. I told them sure go ahead (never got a letter).
It's kind of funny because I just got my Upper and Lower ic pipes in. The stock LICP is in the trunk ( im sure they checked all fluids) as well as my aftermarket BOV.
none of the techs nor the head manager in the dept said a word about anything installed and no one beat on my car (the only driving done was to pull it into the service bay and i got a complement on my FQ-360 parts

just got this done an hour ago and was hassle free.
funny you mentioned about your FQ parts jeremy, the tech was shocked to know my VG was OEM. now he knows the X in the UK had VG's.

Do not go to the Mitsubishi in Rockville. They have lost their minds and actively try and void warranties. The techs look like they came off the street and the management apparently didnt get a GED. Ive heard No VA is not much better. Fredericksburg has the best Mitsu dealership I have ever been in regardless of manufacturer. They even gave me the names of some good custom shops!
